Fall is in full swing, and that means sweaters, cider, and the occasional gourd sailing through the crisp autumn air. If your team wants a seasonal activity that’s equal parts strategy and silliness, it’s time to build a catapult for pumpkins.

You’ve carved them, baked them, and sipped them in latte form. But you haven’t really lived until you’ve watched a coworker fling one across a field with a contraption they built from scratch. So round up the crew for a fall themed event built on creativity, problem-solving, and a little controlled mayhem.

It’s festive, it’s a touch ridiculous, and it’s exactly the kind of team bonding that sticks with people long after the leaves drop. Here’s how to run it, plus a second pumpkin-powered idea to keep the momentum going.

Where Did We Get the Idea to Catapult Pumpkins?

The idea was born when PEAK Scientific came to us wanting something they hadn’t done before. We pitched our classic Catapult to Success program, and then someone floored everyone with one autumn-sized tweak: skip the tennis balls and bean bags, and launch pumpkins instead. We’ve been hooked ever since.

What followed was part engineering challenge, part recess. Teams sketched designs, argued over leverage, and cheered like it was a playoff game every time a pumpkin cleared the grass. Turns out there’s no faster way to break down silos than asking finance and engineering to agree on how to hurl squash.

It’s a natural fit for National Pumpkin Day on October 26, and it earns its spot at your next Halloween office party, too.

“The event was great, and everyone had a great time. It was a good way to end a busy week with a bit of team building and a few good laughs. The facilitators were engaged and proactive…everyone did a great job.” – PEAK Scientific

Your Step-By-Step Guide to Building a Catapult for Pumpkins

Running the event is simpler than the flying squash makes it look. Here’s the flow:

Split into teams and give each one the same kit of supplies.

Put a timer on it. Teams plan, design, and build their catapult for pumpkins against the clock.

Move the action outside, ideally somewhere wide open with plenty of autumn foliage to launch into.

Compete. Score each launch on distance, accuracy, and how clever the pumpkin catapult design turned out to be.

Hand out cider and a tiny pumpkin trophy to the team that earned it.

Some teams go full mad scientist with pulleys and counterweights; others keep it lean and let physics do the talking. Both walk away with a story they’ll retell at the holiday party.

Using Everyday Household Items for a DIY Pumpkin Launcher

No welding torch or engineering degree required. The best part of a DIY pumpkin launcher is watching people turn junk-drawer supplies into something that genuinely works, with duct tape and stubbornness covering most of the gaps. Slingshot, trebuchet, or something with no name yet, the design is up to them.

A few materials that tend to earn their keep:

Wooden spoons and rubber bands for the small, scrappy builds

Plastic buckets and cups for the launch basket

String, tape, and cardboard to hold it all together

PVC piping or broomsticks for serious range

The bravery to test it first

The real work is figuring out how to catapult pumpkins that go far, land somewhere predictable, and don’t fall apart on the first pull. Some teams chase raw power with tension-loaded arms; others trade muscle for finesse with a sling. Watching a design click, and a pumpkin arc cleanly over the field, is the whole payoff.

A Successful Pumpkin Catapult Design for Team Bonding This Fall

You’ll know the pumpkin catapult design landed when the trash talk starts and nobody’s checking their phone. That’s the quiet magic of catapulting pumpkins: people lock in. Whether they’re troubleshooting a busted arm or making a fast call with the clock running, everyone has a job and a stake in the outcome.

Want to raise the stakes? Add side awards. Give one to the most accurate rig, one to the best-looking DIY pumpkin launcher, and one to whoever commits hardest to yelling “fire!”

The pumpkins go up, and the team’s mood goes with them. Add the cool air and a backdrop of red and gold leaves, and you’ve got a fall afternoon people will bring up again next year.

Looking for Another Pumpkin Team Building Activity? Start Your Engines!

Once your team has tasted gourd-powered competition, they’ll want a rematch. The Great Team Building Pumpkin Race gives them one, swapping height for speed as teams design, build, and decorate their own pumpkin racers.

The entry requirement is delightfully low: a race-ready pumpkin needs two independent axles with wheels. Everything past that is open season, which is how you end up with clown wigs, dinosaur scales, and fictional sponsors plastered down the side.

This pumpkin team building activity runs indoors or out, scales from 12 to 250-plus people, and takes about 90 minutes to two hours. Heat winners square off for the Grand Champion title, with bonus prizes for best pit crew and best design.

Different format, same payoff: creativity, collaboration, and a healthy dose of friendly competition. Hosting outside of Halloween season? Swap the pumpkins for watermelons and keep the tradition rolling.

Get in the Autumn Spirit With TeamBonding

Fall is the season to get outside, get a little messy, and send something flying through the sky on purpose. So whether you build a catapult for pumpkins or race them down a ramp, do it with a plan, a few laughs, and a real desire to win.

This year, and every year after, give your team a break from corporate hubbub and energize your workplace culture with clever, budget-friendly Halloween ideas for work.

From creative decorations to interactive games and easy office costume ideas, here are ten inspiring Halloween ideas for the office to help you celebrate spooky season without blowing your office party budget.

10 easy office Halloween ideas

1. Tell ghost stories

Gather your team for a round of spooky storytelling. Whether around a virtual campfire or in a decorated break room, ghost stories create a cozy, low-cost Halloween office activity. Employees can share personal paranormal tales, urban legends, or make up their own creepy stories. It’s a simple way to encourage team bonding while adding chills and laughter to your Halloween office ideas.

Around the Virtual Campfire. Gather your team for a cozy, interactive adventure with Around the Virtual Campfire. Enjoy live music, ghost stories, trivia, and real s’mores or hot chocolate kits delivered to each participant. With breakout rooms, icebreakers, and plenty of laughs, it captures everything great about campfire bonding from anywhere.

2. Halloween decorations for the office

Forget expensive props. Halloween decorations that office teams create themselves often have the greatest impact. Paper bats, hanging skeletons, and a few dollar-store spider webs can instantly transform your workspace.

Get everyone involved in decorating shared areas or personal desks. These small touches turn everyday cubicles into haunted hideaways, breathing life into your office Halloween themes while keeping everyone’s creativity alive and budgets intact.

3. Halloween contest ideas for work: spooky trivia

Who says trivia is just for pub nights?

Trivia brings a playful, competitive vibe to your Halloween office activities. Toss in questions about scary movies, bizarre Halloween facts, or even odd company history. Whether your team’s in-person or remote, spooky trivia gets everyone laughing and engaged. Plus, it’s one of the easiest Halloween contest ideas for work that keeps participation high.

Trick or Trivia. Treat your team to wicked fun with Trick or Trivia, a virtual Halloween trivia contest packed with laughs and friendly competition. Play solo or in teams as you race to answer spooky questions and climb the leaderboard. It’s a festive way to boost team spirit this Halloween season.

Examples

Which famous magician died on Halloween in 1926?

In what horror movie do characters receive creepy phone calls from a masked killer?

What type of vegetable was originally carved before pumpkins became the tradition?

4. Host a costume contest

Costumes are the heartbeat of any good office Halloween idea. Invite your crew to get creative, even if they’re working with last-minute DIY costumes. Categories like funniest, most original, or most ridiculous always add extra laughs. Costume contests let everyone join the fun, whether they go all out or keep it simple.

Corporate Project Runway gets a ghoulish makeover as teams create hauntingly creative fashion collections using recyclable materials. From creepy couture to monster mashups, participants design, build, and model their Halloween-inspired looks. The runway show brings plenty of laughs, unforgettable photos, and a spookily entertaining way to boost team spirit.

5. Trick-or-treat Halloween office activities

Trick-or-treating isn’t only for kids anymore.

Turn your office into a mini candy circuit where employees drop by decorated desks for treats. It’s nostalgic, fun, and easy to pull off. Remote teams can join in too, with mailed treat bags or virtual candy swaps.

These Halloween office activities create lighthearted, casual interactions that build community while sneaking in a bit of childhood joy.

If you’re not on a tight budget, consider gathering some delicious Halloween treats for employees or doing a tasting experience.
6. Pumpkin carving contest

Few things scream office Halloween fun like a pumpkin carving contest on National Pumpkin Day. Supply some carving kits or let employees bring their tools and pumpkins from home (or straight from the grocery store). If you want to skip the mess, decorating pumpkins with paint, stickers, or even office supplies works just as well.

Display the masterpieces around the office to keep your Halloween themes for office spaces alive all week long. This event can also be done virtually!

Summer’s winding down, the out-of-office replies are fading, and your team is trickling back to their desks with sand still in their shoes. Fall is that rare window between vacation season and the year-end sprint, which makes it the perfect time to pull everyone back together. The right fall team building activities can turn that awkward post-summer reset into real momentum.

I’m Paul, and in my 30 years of hosting events as TeamBonding’s Director of Facilitator Training, I’ve watched the season do something special to a group. People show up a little more relaxed, a little more open, and ready to laugh. That’s exactly why I love planning fall work activities, and why I rounded up nine of my favorites below.

These ideas work whether your crew is hybrid, remote, or fully in the office. Whether you kick things off with September team building activities or save the big swing for Halloween-inspired games later in the season, there’s something here for every team.

Over the years, I’ve facilitated hundreds of these events, and the pattern holds every fall. The teams that schedule something now, before the holiday chaos hits, walk into Q4 tighter and more energized than the ones that wait. So let’s dig in.

9 fall team building activities to try this season

1. Fall bake-off

Nothing breaks the ice faster than a little friendly food competition. A fall bake-off is a low-barrier, high-reward way to get people talking. Ask everyone to bring their best fall dessert: pies, breads, cookies, anything drowning in pumpkin spice.

Want more structure? Run a Team Chili Cook-Off. Each group starts with basic ingredients and earns extras by completing mini challenges, so it’s part cooking, part strategy, all delicious. It travels well, too, working in the office or remotely with photo submissions and online voting.

Craving variety? Turn it into a Salsa Showdown or an apple crumble cook-off. Yes, it gets competitive, and that’s exactly why it’s one of the easiest fall team building activities to pull off.

2. Give back

Fall is the season of gratitude, and giving back is one of the most meaningful ways to spend it together. In my experience, the events that involve helping others are the ones people talk about long after the snacks are gone.

Pick one or mix and match:

Foodbank Showdown. Teams compete to build care packages for families in need.

Little Team Library. Build a Little Free Library kit and co-write a children’s book.

The Donation Station. Assemble clothes, toys, or hygiene kits for local shelters.

Cooking for a Cause. Prepare meals for local shelters and food banks.

Paws for a Cause. Build dog beds and cat scratch pads for animal rescues.

The Big Give. Create toys and care items and donate them to local charities.

Emergency Shelter Build. Construct real shelters for people facing homelessness, then hand them off to a community partner.

These are fall office activities with heart, and a great way to line up your culture with kindness.

3. Pumpkin carving

It’s not fall without pumpkins. Pumpkin carving is one of the most iconic fall team building activities, especially in October. Split into small teams, hand out gourds and tools, set a timer, and vote on categories like Spookiest, Most Creative, and Best Pop Culture Reference.

Prefer to keep it remote? The virtual version works just as well. And if you want to channel some engineering energy, try Pumpkin Catapulting. I wrote the whole playbook on it, so trust me: launching a decorated gourd for distance is more fun than any adult should admit.

4. Costume contest

Adults love Halloween just as much as kids do. A Halloween Costume Contest blends creativity, competition, and a healthy dose of showing off. Have folks dress up, introduce themselves in character, and vote on winners.

Best Team Costume

Most Creative DIY

Scariest Costume

Most Likely to Be Worn Again at Target

Want a twist? Try Trick or Trivia, a Halloween quiz showdown, or go big with Corporate Project Runway: Halloween Edition, where teams get 20 minutes and one roll of toilet paper to build a look. These are October event ideas that let personalities shine.

5. Fall tastings

Seasonal sipping is a fall tradition I fully endorse. Hosting a tasting is an easy way to celebrate the flavors of the season, and it’s especially popular with hybrid and remote teams looking to unwind.

Wine Making or Wine Tasting. Explore rich reds or try a hands-on blending session.

Mixology Lessons. Learn to mix apple bourbon cocktails or spiced cider.

Mocktail Masters. Craft spirit-free cocktails through fun challenges where teams earn their ingredients, so everyone gets in on the fun.

Hot beverage flights. Offer coffee, cider, or hot chocolate with flavor cards and marshmallow mix-ins.

Pair these with another event or let them stand alone as a reward. Think classy happy hour with better lighting. A tasting is also one of the gentler ways to get a quieter team mingling, since a cup of cider in hand does wonders for loosening people up.

6. Pumpkin racing

Ready to crank up the energy? Pumpkin Racing is one of the quirkiest fall celebration ideas around, and it never fails to get competitive. Each team decorates and engineers a rolling pumpkin “car” with wheels, paint, and a spoiler.

Race them down a track, hand out prizes, and grab photos for the newsletter. It’s a perfect pick for National Pumpkin Day on October 26, and one of the few fall games adults will get genuinely fired up about.

7. Escape rooms

If your team needs a reminder that communication is more than a reply-all, an escape room is a hands-on fix. These puzzle-packed challenges run on teamwork, quick thinking, and the occasional triumphant “aha” under pressure.

Lock your crew in a conference room or keep it digital with a virtual option. Pick a fall-flavored adventure like the Virtual Haunted House Escape Room for puzzles with a paranormal twist. These fall team building activities in office or online both land the same way.

What I love about escape rooms is how fast they expose a team’s real dynamics. Within ten minutes, you can see who naturally organizes, who quietly solves problems, and who keeps everyone calm when the clock is ticking. That insight sticks around long after the door swings open.

8. Fall scavenger hunts

Few fall event ideas pack the same mix of adrenaline and bonding as a scavenger hunt. With crisp air and a noticeable morale bump after summer’s lull, it’s the right moment to send your team outdoors or online on a mission.

Today’s hunts are high-tech, app-based, and full of storytelling. Try Zombie Rising, where teams race to stop an undead outbreak. Want speed? Monster Mash Dash sends teams chasing monsters across the city. Prefer heart? Healthcare Heroes supports frontline workers heading into the colder months.

For something with a global spin, Passport to Adventure is a fast-paced quest packed with cultural challenges, puzzles, and strategic trading. These hunts flex to your team, your city, and your values, which makes them some of the most versatile fall work activities you can run.

9. Murder mysteries

Fall’s early sunsets set the perfect mood for a good mystery. A murder mystery is part theater, part puzzle, and 100% team building, pushing groups to communicate and think critically as they chase down suspects and secrets.

Want dinner and deception? Murder Mystery Dinners let people dress the part, enjoy a catered meal, and crack the case before dessert. Prefer to move? Sleuth: The Murder Mystery Scavenger Hunt blends clue-hunting with real-world exploration.

Murder mysteries turn quiet participants into curious collaborators, which is exactly why they’re one of the most memorable November fun work activities your company can host. I’ve seen the most reserved person in the room become the one who cracks the case, and that shift in confidence carries straight back to the day job.

Every week, I hear some version of the same question from HR leaders and managers: “How do we get our people to collaborate better when half of them think AI is going to replace them?” It’s a fair concern. The technology conversation has shifted from curiosity to anxiety in a lot of workplaces, and that anxiety can quietly erode trust, communication, and morale if you don’t address it head-on.

But here’s what I’ve learned after more than 35 years of running team building events for companies of every size, including 80% of the Fortune 100: the best way to turn uncertainty into confidence is through shared experience. And right now, AI team building is one of the most effective ways to create that experience.

In this article, I want to walk you through how AI-powered events are helping teams bond, communicate, and innovate together, and I’ll share a few of our programs that are getting incredible results.

Why does AI team building work so well?

This approach works because it puts everyone on equal footing. When your team sits down to use AI tools together for the first time, the playing field levels out. The senior VP and the newest hire are both figuring it out in real time, asking questions, laughing at unexpected outputs, and building something together. That kind of leveling rarely happens in a typical meeting or offsite.

The benefits of team building are well-documented: stronger communication, higher trust, and better retention. What AI adds to the equation is a sense of discovery. People get curious. They start experimenting. And when curiosity replaces anxiety, teams start communicating in ways they haven’t before.

Can AI help in building better team dynamics and communication? Absolutely, and I’ve watched it happen in real time. When people collaborate on something new and a little unpredictable, they naturally open up. They share ideas they might have kept to themselves in a conference room. They listen differently. That shift in dynamic is exactly what makes AI corporate activities so powerful for organizations trying to break through the same old patterns.

What do AI team building activities look like?

These programs come in all shapes and sizes, and they don’t require anyone on your team to be a tech expert. Our facilitators handle the heavy lifting, guiding participants through every step so the focus stays on collaboration, creativity, and fun. Here are a few of our programs that teams are loving right now.

Shark Teams AI

If you’ve ever watched Shark Tank and thought, “My team could do that,” Shark Teams AI is your chance to prove it. In this high-energy program, teams brainstorm a product concept, develop a pitch, and present it to a panel of “sharks” who evaluate each idea for creativity, viability, and presentation quality.

What makes this one special is the AI layer. Our facilitators guide teams in using AI tools to brainstorm ideas, refine their pitches, and sharpen their messaging. The combination of human creativity and AI assistance produces some surprisingly polished results, and a lot of laughs along the way. It teaches teams how to think strategically, collaborate under pressure, and present with confidence.

Breaking News AI

Breaking News AI is one of our newest AI-powered events, and it’s been a hit with groups of all sizes. Teams become independent news organizations tasked with producing a fictional “breaking news” broadcast using AI collaboration tools.

Participants take on roles like scriptwriting, research, image and video generation, voice synthesis, editing, and production. The stories are meant to be fun and creative; think silly workplace scenarios or exaggerated company milestones. Along the way, teams discover how human-AI collaboration can spark ideas and streamline work without replacing the human element. No tech background is needed, and our expert facilitators walk everyone through every step.

Charity Guitar Build

This one combines music, creativity, charitable giving, and AI into a single experience. In the Charity Guitar Build, teams construct electric guitars from scratch, design custom guitar straps and album covers, and then use AI-generated music composition tools to write their very own team song.

The guitars are donated to a local music school after the event, so your team walks away knowing their work will put instruments into the hands of aspiring musicians. If you’re looking for charitable team building that also introduces your group to AI in a creative, low-pressure way, this is a fantastic option.

Once Upon a Team

For teams that want to combine community impact with storytelling and creativity, Once Upon a Team is one of the most meaningful AI-powered group activities we offer. Participants customize duffel bags, pillowcases, and night lights for local foster children while collaborating on something truly special: an original children’s book.

Using guided prompts and intuitive AI tools, teams write and illustrate their own story, developing characters, themes, and imagery that reflect hope and adventure. Each book is printed onsite and added to the foster care bags, giving every child a one-of-a-kind keepsake. The storytelling process is full of communication, problem-solving, and plenty of laughter. Teams leave proud, energized, and deeply connected.

How can AI events boost employee engagement?

One of the biggest challenges I hear about from managers and HR professionals is keeping people engaged and motivated. Traditional off-sites and retreats can start to feel stale if you run the same formats year after year. AI events bring something genuinely fresh to the table because the technology itself is evolving so quickly. Every experience feels current and relevant, which keeps participation high and energy even higher.

I’ve watched teams walk into an AI-powered event with skepticism and walk out buzzing with ideas. That kind of energy doesn’t come from a PowerPoint presentation or a trust fall. It comes from doing something together that feels new, exciting, and a little unpredictable.

There’s also a practical takeaway that teams bring back to the office. When people learn how to collaborate with AI tools in a fun, pressure-free environment, they’re more comfortable experimenting with those tools at work. That translates directly into workplace innovation and productivity gains, which is exactly the kind of ROI that makes leadership pay attention.

Will AI replace human connection in team building?

Not a chance. I’ve been in this business long enough to know that no technology, no matter how impressive, will ever replace the experience of people laughing together, solving problems together, and creating something together. What AI does is give teams a new way to do all of those things. It’s a tool, not a substitute.

The best programs in this space use technology as a catalyst for connection, not a replacement for it. When a group of coworkers writes a ridiculous breaking news broadcast together or composes a team anthem using AI music tools, the technology fades into the background. What you remember is the collaboration, the creativity, and the feeling of accomplishing something as a group.

Ready to bring AI team building to your organization?

If you’ve been thinking about how to bring your team closer together while also helping them get comfortable with new technology, these experiences are one of the smartest investments you can make. You’ll give your people a shared experience that builds trust, sparks creativity, and sends them back to work feeling more connected and confident.

Planning the office Halloween celebration can feel like one more thing on an already packed plate, especially when you want it to land with everyone, from remote staff to the front office. The good news is that the right Halloween team building activities turn that pressure into the most memorable day of the season.

As the founder of TeamBonding, you might already know I’m pretty passionate about team building. I’m also a huge fan of Halloween, and I’ve spent years pairing the two to celebrate spooky season while bonding with employees and coworkers.

In this guide, I’ll highlight twelve of my favorite activities to BOO-st your team’s Halloween spirit and overall morale this year (sorry, couldn’t help myself with that pun).

12 fun Halloween team building office activities for the workplace

These Halloween team building activities are some of my favorites to spice up company parties in the fall.

From low-key office decor to competitive Halloween team games, these Halloween team building activities cover every kind of crew.

Whether you have your sights set on a virtual haunted house and pumpkin carving or you want to step it up a notch with pumpkin racing, you’ll find what you’re looking for on this list.

So, without further ado, my top twelve group activities for Halloween:

1. Do a virtual pumpkin carving class

Carve out some time with your team (the puns continue) with virtual pumpkin carving. It’s an alternative to an in-person pumpkin carving Halloween team building activity for remote and hybrid teams.

This is one of my favorite Halloween virtual events for work because it’s great from start to finish. Your team members will have carving kits delivered to their doors ahead of time, which really amps up the excitement. (I mean, who doesn’t love getting presents?)

Next, they’ll hop on an event hosted by a Master Pumpkin Sculptor, have fun together, and wrap things up with awards and prizes.

Pro tip: This is also a great way to celebrate National Pumpkin Day on October 26th!

2. Compete in classic pumpkin races

Whether you’ve heard of the world-famous Pumpkin Races or not, this one’s always a hit. Our Pumpkin Race is an in-person event where your team will work together to assemble and design pumpkin racers before competing for the Grand Champion title.

This is one of the most fun and unusual Halloween team building ideas your team will ever experience! Trust me.

I’ll never forget the first time we tried Pumpkin Racing. I admit, I was a bit skeptical until I saw teams from a tech company get super invested in the aerodynamic designs and weight distribution of their individual pumpkins—it was like watching Formula 1!

The top two teams had these strategically designed racers that just demolished the rest of the competition. One was lovingly titled the “over-engineered gourd,” and it became a mascot for the rest of the day. I think that was when I knew we’d found a winner!

3. Give everyone creepy treats

This is less of an engaged, hands-on Halloween team building activity and more of a fun gift to your team. No matter how you approach it, you’ll have plenty of tasty cookies, candies, cocktails, and other treats to enjoy after the event!

Whether you’re in-person, virtual, or hybrid, just look for a fun way to provide your team with a wealth of creepy treats, spooky cocktails, and candy platters. You can even make it a Halloween food contest and give a special prize to the winners.

You can find tons of themed recipes on Pinterest if you need some inspiration.

4. Shake up some spooky mocktails

Want the festive cocktail energy without the booze? Spirit-free spooky drinks are one of the easiest Halloween office ideas to make inclusive for everyone on the team.

Our Mocktail Masters class turns mixology into a game. Your team will tackle fun challenges to earn ingredients, then craft their own zero-proof creations under the guidance of a pro.

It’s a natural fit for spooky season, too. A little dry ice fog, some blood-orange garnish, and a creepy name or two, and you’ve got a “potion lab” your whole team can enjoy together, designated drivers included.

5. Go all out with Halloween decor

Not all celebrations have to be active, scheduled events. Sometimes, decorating the office for spooky season is plenty! And nothing says Halloween like some creepy decor around the office (or on your newsletter and socials for virtual teams).

Here are my picks for quick, festive Halloween decor:

Pumpkins (bonus points if they’re entries from a pumpkin carving contest!)

Ghosts

Bats

Spider webs

Gravestones

Want to go a step further? Turn the office into a haunted house that your team will get to see on their way out the door on the last workday of October. Just don’t amp up the experience until everyone’s done working so they’re not distracted.

Pro tip: The more glow, the better! And the possibilities are endless with flameless candles.

6. Try a haunted house escape room

Speaking of haunted houses, think your team is brave enough to try a virtual Haunted House Escape Room? I do!

This Halloween team building activity is one of my favorites every year. Your team will compete against each other while solving cryptic clues and completing hilarious photo challenges to be the first to escape the virtual haunted house.

Escape rooms also make awesome Halloween-themed icebreakers since new team members will get to show off their skills as integral parts of the equation.

7. Catapult and smash some pumpkins

Okay, I know this isn’t a normal Halloween team building activity, but we all need to blow off some steam every now and then. Workdays can be draining, so what better way to let loose and prevent burnout than catapulting pumpkins and watching them explode?

Trust me, our Halloween version of Catapult to Success will be sure to give your team a day they will remember, whether you’re hosting the event for Halloween or just as a Fall team building idea.

This whole thing started in 2017 when PEAK Scientific got in touch with us about a team building program. They saw our Catapult to Success program and raised us catapulting pumpkins—pure genius.

You’ll use household materials to build a launching mechanism for mini pumpkins before competing to see who can fling theirs the furthest and be crowned champion. It’s an experience like no other, and it’ll keep your teams talking for years to come.

8. Take on a Squid Game-inspired challenge

If your team loves a little high-stakes drama, this is the Halloween team game for you (minus the actual stakes, of course). Our Squad Game puts teamwork and creativity to the test across five immersive challenges inspired by the hit show.

The eerie, competitive tension fits spooky season perfectly. Teams race through rounds that reward quick thinking and tight coordination, and the suspense between challenges is half the fun.

It’s one of those Halloween team building office activities that gets even the quietest colleagues fired up, since every round needs the whole group pulling together to advance.

9. Solve a murder mystery

Few things are spookier than putting your team’s detective skills to the test to find a killer. In our Virtual Murder Mystery Dinner, In the Company of Killers, you and your team will do just that.

It starts with a virtual cocktail hour where you and your team will meet four of the most outlandish characters around. Clues and motives start popping up. Then, suddenly, the murder! And the fun really begins.

You could also try our Virtual Crime Scene Investigation, where your team will become an elite CSI unit tasked with sorting through the evidence to figure out who committed a crime, how they did it, and why.

Regardless of which you pick, this Halloween virtual game for work will have your team questioning suspects, evaluating clues, and putting your best problem-solving skills to work with our state-of-the-art virtual crime scene. Spooky right?

I might be a bit biased, but I highly recommend trying this one! These really hold a special place in my heart, partially because my first venture was The Mystery Cafe, a murder mystery theatre that did weekly dinner shows in a Boston bar’s basement.

This was before murder mystery dinners were trending, and my first show was Death and Taxes (a comedy about corporate greed).

We transformed that dark, old basement into a fully immersive crime scene, smashed enough mirrors to bring a lifetime of bad luck, and took down towering 8-foot doors to create custom sets that bore no resemblance to the basement bar.

10. Have fun with a Halloween scavenger hunt

Ah, scavenger hunts—they’re such fun experiences that’ll take you right out of your daily life. It’s no wonder that they’re some of our most popular Halloween icebreaker games!

Despite how much of an escape it is, the thrill of a scavenger hunt fosters team spirit, encourages collaboration, and boosts problem-solving among colleagues.

Your team members will immerse themselves in a Halloween-themed adventure that could range from a zombie apocalypse in Zombie Rising to chasing down monsters in the Monster Mash Dash.

Any of our Halloween scavenger hunts are sure to add a touch of mystery and excitement to the workplace this fall, and they always make for memorable and enjoyable experiences for everyone involved.

11. Embark on a global quest

Looking for something with a sense of adventure baked in? Passport to Adventure is a fast-paced quest filled with global puzzles, cultural challenges, and strategic trading.

While it isn’t strictly spooky, it scratches the same itch as a Halloween scavenger hunt: teams racing the clock, solving riddles, and wheeling and dealing their way to victory.

It’s a great pick when you’ve got a mixed crew that wants the energy of a hunt without the haunted-house theme. The collaboration, communication, and friendly competition all carry over beautifully to your fall celebration.

12. Compete with a Quickfire Halloween game

Collaborate, communicate, and conquer with Quickfire Halloween! This is more than an app-based Halloween team building activity. it’s an experience that’ll ignite your creativity and spooky season spirit!

Your team will conquer a series of thrilling Halloween challenges, like pumpkin-themed games, spooky makeup, trivia, dance-offs, and so much more. There’s a challenge for every Halloween enthusiast!

Somewhere around the middle of October, a familiar question starts circulating in group chats and break rooms: Do we do something for Boss’s Day, and if so, what? Nobody wants to look like a brown-noser, nobody wants to snub a manager who has genuinely had their back, and most of us only have a fuzzy sense of what the day is even about.

This article clears all of that up. I’ll walk you through what Boss’s Day is, where it came from, when Boss’s Day 2026 lands, and how your team can celebrate in a way that feels real instead of forced.

I’m David Goldstein, founder of TeamBonding, and I’ve spent more than three decades watching teams figure out how to appreciate one another. I’ve also been the boss on the receiving end of these gestures, which gives me a slightly unusual vantage point. Here’s what I’ve learned: the best celebrations have almost nothing to do with the size of the gift and everything to do with whether they feel honest.

What is Boss’s Day?

Boss’s Day is an annual workplace observance set aside for employees to thank the managers and supervisors who lead them. It started in 1958, when Patricia Bays Haroski, a secretary at State Farm Insurance in Illinois, registered the holiday with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday, and he happened to be her boss.

In 1962, the governor of Illinois made it official, and by 1979, Hallmark had cards on the shelf for it. Today, the holiday goes by a few names: National Boss’s Day, Bosses Day, and sometimes Supervisor Appreciation Day. It shows up on calendars across the U.S. and in a growing list of other countries.

When is Boss’s Day 2026?

Boss’s Day 2026 falls on Friday, October 16. The date is fixed; when it lands on a weekend, the celebration shifts to the closest workday. In 2026, you catch a break, because the 16th is a Friday. This year, it’s easy to fold any boss appreciation day plans straight into an end-of-week team moment.

Why celebrate your boss at all?

A good boss shapes your workday more than almost any other single factor, which is the honest reason this holiday earns its place. Gallup found that managers account for at least 70% of the variance in team engagement, meaning the gap between a thriving team and a miserable one usually comes down to who leads it.

When you frame it that way, setting aside one day to recognize a manager who does that job well no longer feels silly. A boss absorbs pressure from above, runs interference for the team, and quietly makes a hundred small decisions a week that you never see. People rarely leave companies so much as they leave managers, and the reverse is just as true: a great one is a big part of why people stay.

Recognition runs both directions, too. When a team takes a moment to acknowledge a leader who has earned it, that leader is far more likely to keep showing up the same way. If you want to go deeper on what good leadership looks like, our take on people oriented leadership and these leadership activities to try at work are both worth a read.

Supervisor Appreciation Day ideas your team will enjoy

The best boss appreciation day ideas get the whole team involved instead of leaving one person to buy a card and chase everyone for five dollars. I lean hard toward shared experiences here, because they create the kind of memory a gift card can’t. A few that work especially well:

Do some good together. Spend the day giving back on the Do Good Bus, where we handle the planning and your team handles the volunteering at a mystery location. It’s a great fit for a boss who cares about more than just the bottom line, and it also serves as a reminder of the broader benefits of volunteering for the whole crew.

Turn it into a friendly competition. A program like In It To Win It puts your boss and the team on a level playing field with a run of fast, funny challenges. Watching your manager get competitive over a relay game is its own form of appreciation.

Send everyone on a quest. Passport to Adventure is a fast-paced team building quest packed with global puzzles, cultural challenges, and strategic trading, ideal for a boss who likes a little strategy with their fun.

Cook something as a crew. A culinary team building event turns the day into a meal you all made together, which tends to dissolve the manager-employee wall faster than almost anything else.

Keep remote folks included. If your boss leads a distributed team, a virtual event makes sure nobody sits out the celebration just because they work from home.

Boss Appreciation Day gifts that don’t miss

The best Boss’s Day gifts are specific rather than generic, so skip the impersonal mug and aim for something that shows you pay attention. The trick is to make it about the person, not the title. A handful of ideas that tend to land:

A group card where everyone writes down one concrete thing their boss did that mattered to them. Specifics beat platitudes every time.

A boss appreciation day gift tied to a real interest: good coffee for the caffeine-dependent, a book from a favorite author, or tickets to a game they never miss.

A small charitable donation made in your boss’s name to a cause they care about, which lands well with leaders who would rather give than receive.

A shared experience, which, as you can probably tell by now, often beats any object you can wrap.

A handwritten note. I know it sounds old-fashioned, but as someone who has kept a few of these over the years, I can say they outlast every gadget on the desk.

How do you celebrate Boss’s Day without making it awkward?

Celebrate in a way that matches your actual relationship with your boss, and the awkwardness mostly takes care of itself. The honest tension with National Boss’s Day is the power dynamic, since nobody should feel pressured to spend money on the person who signs their paychecks. So keep it optional, keep it low-cost, and keep it sincere.

A genuine “Happy Boss’s Day,” paired with one specific thank-you, will always beat a guilt-driven group collection. And if your team would rather direct the energy toward each other, there’s no rule against borrowing a few Employee Appreciation Day ideas and celebrating everyone at once.

Make Boss Appreciation Day count

Here’s my bottom line after thirty-plus years of this: Boss’s Day works when it’s a real moment between people who respect each other, and it falls flat the second it becomes a checkbox. Whether you organize a full team event or simply say a heartfelt “Happy Boss’s Day” on October 16, the goal is the same. Make the person who leads you feel seen. Do that, and you build the kind of trust that pays off long after October.

Whatever you land on, the team building experiences that work for this holiday are the same ones that build a stronger crew the other 364 days a year. If you want a place to start, browse our full lineup of team building programs and pick one that fits your boss and your people.

That’s a gift any good boss will remember long after the candy is gone.

So you’ve been told to plan a corporate event. Maybe it’s a sales kickoff, a leadership offsite, a holiday celebration, or your company’s first all-hands since the team went hybrid. Suddenly you’re asking yourself big questions: What’s the right venue? What’s a realistic budget? What does anyone even know about the corporate events industry, and where do you start?

I get it. After more than 35 years of building TeamBonding from a basement operation into a company that’s worked with 80% of the Fortune 100, I can tell you the meetings and events industry can feel intimidating from the outside. There’s a lot of jargon, a lot of opinions, and a lot of moving parts. Once you understand the basics, though, planning a great event becomes a whole lot less scary, and a whole lot more fun.

This is your beginner’s guide. We’ll cover what the corporate events industry actually is, the 2026 stats and meeting trends every team leader should know, practical tips for planning your first (or fiftieth) corporate event, and what’s coming up for Global Meetings Industry Day 2026.

What is the corporate events industry?

The corporate events industry is the ecosystem of professionals, venues, and vendors that plan and produce business gatherings of all shapes and sizes. That includes conferences, trade shows, product launches, sales kickoffs, leadership off-sites, executive retreats, training sessions, internal team meetings, holiday parties, and yes, team building events.

You’ll hear it called by a few different names. The meetings industry, the meetings and events industry, the event industry, MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions). They’re roughly the same animal, just sliced a few different ways.

Whatever you call it, this industry is enormous. It supports planners, venues, hotels, caterers, AV providers, transportation companies, facilitators, and entire networks of suppliers whose job is to make sure your event runs smoothly. When done well, these gatherings shape corporate culture, accelerate growth, and bring people together in ways a Slack channel never could.

The corporate events industry by the numbers

Let’s start with some 2026 stats that show why this sector is having a moment:

In 2024, meetings and events generated more than $126 billion in travel-related spending in the U.S. and directly supported nearly 620,000 American jobs, according to the U.S. Travel Association.

85% of meeting professionals say they’re optimistic about 2026, the highest reading in five years, according to the Amex GBT 2026 Global Meetings and Events Forecast.

Roughly half of meeting professionals are now using AI somewhere in their event planning and execution.

The number of internal team meetings, sales kickoffs, and product launches keeps climbing year over year.

Translation? After a few wobbly years, the meetings industry is back, growing, and innovating fast.

What are the biggest meeting trends for 2026?

The biggest meeting trends in 2026 all point to one thing: putting attendees first. Here’s what the data and three and a half decades of doing this work tell me to watch.

In-person is back, with intention: Hybrid is still in the toolkit, but in-person formats are once again the norm. People want to be in the room.

Experiences over agendas: Improving the attendee experience is the top priority for meeting professionals heading into 2026, and 42% of attendees say they want more interactive sessions, like workshops and demos. Death by PowerPoint is finally on its way out.

AI as a planning partner: From content generation and theme creation to attendee matchmaking and budget optimization, AI is showing up across the meetings and events industry.

Sustainability and inclusion baked in: These aren’t add-ons anymore. They’re baseline expectations for the audiences you’re trying to reach.

Rising costs: It’s not all rosy. More than 70% of pros expect costs to climb in 2026, so creativity and clear ROI matter more than ever.

If there’s one thread running through all of this, it’s that meetings have to mean something. The bar is higher than it used to be, and that’s a good thing.

How do you plan a successful corporate event?

Planning a successful corporate event comes down to a handful of fundamentals. I’ve watched every version of brilliant and disastrous over the years, and the events that actually work tend to follow this pattern:

Start with the goal, not the activity: Are you onboarding new hires? Launching a product? Rewarding top sellers? Reconnecting two merging departments? The goal drives every other decision.

Know your audience: A leadership offsite for the C-suite is not the same animal as a holiday party for 800 employees. Plan for the people who are actually showing up.

Pick the right venue: Where you host shapes the energy of the entire event. Our guide to the best conference venues and destinations is a good starting point if you’re scouting locations.

Build in real connection: Adding team building to the agenda is the difference between attendees clocking in and attendees leaning in. More on that in a second.

Measure what matters: Survey attendees, track engagement, and tie outcomes back to the original goal. If you can’t show what worked, you can’t repeat it.

For a deeper walk-through with specific event types and ideas, our ultimate guide to the best corporate events covers a lot of ground.

Where does team building fit in?

Team building is the secret weapon of corporate events. It’s the thing that turns a forgettable agenda into a story people retell at the office for months.

I’m biased, sure, but the research backs it up. According to Gallup, engaged teams show 23% higher profitability and significantly lower turnover. Building shared experiences and a sense of belonging drives all of it.

One of my favorite flavors is charitable team building, especially when it’s woven into a larger conference, kickoff, or offsite. Shannon DuPont, our Director of Program Development, said it best in a recent webinar on charitable events and engagement:

“By breaking down silos through a shared cause, you’re opening the door to innovation and stronger internal networks.”

That’s exactly what the best corporate events do. They give people a reason to connect that goes beyond the meeting agenda. Whether that’s a charitable build, a culinary challenge, or a high-tech scavenger hunt, the magic is in the shared experience.

What Is Global Meetings Industry Day 2026?

Global Meetings Industry Day 2026 is a worldwide day of advocacy that celebrates the impact of meetings, conferences, conventions, trade shows, and events. GMID 2026 is set for May 6, 2026, and this year it’s led by the Events Industry Council (EIC).

The 2026 GMID theme is “Business Events and Exhibitions: The Human Catalyst for Global Growth.” The day brings event professionals, organizations, destinations, and partners together to demonstrate how face-to-face gatherings drive innovation, jobs, and connection across borders.

Global Meetings Industry Day topics for 2026

Some of the Global Meetings Industry Day topics you’ll see featured across panels, broadcasts, and local activations on GMID 2026:

The economic impact of business events. EIC is releasing its 2026 Global Economic Significance of Business Events Study to coincide with the day.

Advocacy for the meetings and events industry with policymakers

The role of in-person events in a screen-saturated world

AI and technology shaping the future of the event industry

Sustainability, inclusion, and workforce development across the meetings industry

Even if you’ve never participated in GMID before, this is a great year to start. Hosting a small internal session, attending a local activation, or sharing why meetings matter on social media all count.

Helpful resources for the meetings and events industry

A few places I keep bookmarked for staying current on the corporate events industry:

Events Industry Council (EIC), the global federation behind GMID and the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) credential

Meeting Professionals International (MPI), with chapters worldwide and an annual GMID broadcast

PCMA (Professional Convention Management Association), especially their Convening Leaders conference

U.S. Travel Association, for industry advocacy and economic impact data

Amex GBT Global Meetings and Events Forecast, the annual snapshot of where the industry is heading

And on our end, our insights and resources hub is packed with planning guides, program ideas, and stories from inside the corporate events industry.

Bringing it all together

The corporate events industry can feel like a maze when you’re starting out. It’s also one of the most rewarding parts of work. Every event is a chance to bring people together, break down silos, and spark a moment of real connection in a world that doesn’t have nearly enough of those.

Whether you’re planning your first all-hands or your fiftieth client conference, the playbook stays the same. Know your goals, plan for your people, give them something to remember, and then go do it again, but better.

If you want help making your next corporate event one your team won’t stop talking about, get in touch. That’s been our specialty for over 35 years.

In a world full of distractions and easily sidetracked individuals, finding effective employee morale boosters can feel like an uphill battle. I’m the founder of TeamBonding, and after decades of helping organizations build stronger, happier teams, I can tell you that low morale is one of the most expensive problems a business can ignore.

Low employee morale costs more than just productivity. It leads to higher turnover rates and directly impacts your bottom line. In fact, companies with engaged employees have higher earnings per share, according to Gallup. With 90% of employees getting distracted at least once a day and losing an average of 1 hour and 18 minutes of productivity, addressing morale is essential.

In this article, I’ll share my top employee morale boosters, backed by real experience and expert insights, so you can start building a workplace people actually want to show up to.

Why does employee morale matter?

Higher workplace morale directly contributes to increased motivation, productivity, creativity, connection, and retention. When you encourage a company culture with high levels of morale, you create an environment where employees feel:

Motivated to do their best as they navigate responsibilities

Focused and productive as they complete daily tasks

Empowered to take initiative and lean into their personal creativity

Connected to their fellow team members and the company as a whole

Valued for their contributions and loyal to the company

That last point is especially important. When people feel genuinely valued, it changes everything about how they approach their work. And that’s exactly what the right morale boosters at work are designed to do.

How to spot the symptoms of low employee morale

Before implementing morale building activities, it’s important to take stock of the current morale situation in your workplace. Here are some telltale signs of low employee morale to watch for:

Lack of cooperation: When office morale is low, employees are generally less likely to work well together or accept complex tasks from leadership.

Few personal conversations: Friendly conversations aren’t required for successful business operations, but a scarcity of personal communication could be a direct symptom of low morale.

Rare personal initiatives: If fewer employees are taking the initiative to improve the company, it could be a sign that morale has dipped.

Increased turnover: A higher number of people leaving could be a sign that morale is dropping across the organization.

Overall poor performance or attitude: This one can be gradual and easy to overlook. Ask yourself: are your employees doing less than they used to? Is negativity more common?

Quiet quitting: This is a major symptom of low morale, where employees put in only the minimum effort needed to keep their jobs. These employees are often actively disengaged and disinvested.

If you notice any of these signs, chances are you’re past due for some morale boosters at work. It’s time to get your employees engaged and energized.

Start building staff morale right away with a survey

Regardless of how you feel about the signs above, it’s a good idea to see what your employees think, too. Consider issuing a company-wide employee survey to get some firsthand insights.

A survey is a great first step because it lets your team members know that you’re thinking about their feelings and you want to hear what they have to say. As Mark DeCarlo put it on our Team Building Saves the World podcast, when people feel heard, valued, and included in the process, that’s when the real magic happens at work.

Consider sending an employee recognition survey to better understand how your employees want to be recognized and appreciated.

Top 7 ways to boost morale at work

Ready to address morale levels in your workplace so you can watch engagement and productivity rise? Here are my favorite employee morale boosters.

You’ll notice a trend here: many of the recommendations on this list involve team building in one form or another. That’s because it works. I’ve spent my entire career watching it transform teams. Team building makes people feel like important stakeholders in their company, and once that switch flips, morale building activities practically take care of themselves. The quit rate drops, people are happier, and their output improves, all without a major financial investment.

1. Encourage in-office play

Organizing team building games for your employees can help create quality relationships among staff and allow them to de-stress, which in turn can increase work morale.

If you’re on a budget but still want to incorporate play into the regular schedule, here are a few fun, engaging, and accessible in-office morale building activities:

Two truths and a lie

This is a tried-and-true communication game that enables your employees to get to know each other in a fun way. The gameplay is simple:

Have each employee think up three things about themselves: two are true, one is a lie.

Ask them to share with the group. The rest of the group votes on what they think was the lie.

This is a fantastic (and completely free) way to get people to open up, share some laughs, and boost workplace morale.

Barter puzzle

All you need for this game is about an hour and a few jigsaw puzzles. This game works best with groups of four or fewer people. Here’s how you play:

Jumble up the pieces of multiple jigsaw puzzles, one for each group.

Divide the jumbled pieces equally between the puzzle boxes.

Give each group a box and situate all the teams at a large table. Ask each group to complete the puzzle shown on their box.

Encourage the teams to negotiate and trade with other teams to complete their puzzles. This builds problem-solving, creative thinking, and teamwork.

The first team to complete their puzzle wins!

Jeopardy

If you’d like a game show-inspired activity, our officially licensed Jeopardy!® game is available in virtual, hybrid, and in-person formats and can be customized for your team.

You can also organize a DIY version as a free office morale booster:

Choose four to six categories, such as company history, pop culture, random trivia, industry facts, or office lingo.

Create five questions per category, with increasing difficulty and point values.

Build the game board on PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Kahoot.

Designate a host, a scorekeeper, and two to four teams of players.

Have teams take turns picking questions, with the option to buzz in if the original team answers incorrectly.

The team with the most points wins! Consider gift cards for the winning team and snacks for everyone.

Try improv games

Whether you’re leading a meeting, addressing a crisis, or talking to a client, business improv is an invaluable skill that improves outcomes in the workplace. It also makes for one of the best employee morale boosters because it gets people laughing, thinking on their feet, and building trust with their teammates all at the same time.

I’ve seen firsthand how improv games break down walls between people who barely spoke to each other before the session started. There’s something about the spontaneity and laughter that levels the playing field and helps everyone loosen up.

Want to try this with your team? We published a free book of improv exercises designed for all levels of experience, including step-by-step instructions for games like Yes And, Pass the Clap, Count to 20, Party Quirks, and Excuses, Excuses.

2. Try a virtual reality game

We all need an escape from the real world from time to time. Virtual reality games are a fun and unique way to increase work morale while trying something completely new. They also make fantastic morale boosters for employees because they create shared experiences that people actually remember and talk about long after the event.

Take our Infinite Loop program, for example. Through VR, teams compete to rescue a prisoner trapped in the virtual world. Fast-paced challenges are tracked on an electronic leaderboard, fueling the spirit of fun, friendly competition. It’s one of those morale building activities that people genuinely can’t stop talking about afterward.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-66146" src="https://www.teambonding.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/The-Infinite-Loop-TIL-300x169.jpg" alt="Participant wearing a VR headset during The Infinite Loop team building event, collaborating with teammates to solve virtual challenges.
3. Get out of the office during work hours

While it’s easier and often cheaper to stay in the office for your morale building activities, the benefits of getting outside are hard to overstate.

Research shows that taking breaks during work can increase creativity, prevent decision fatigue, and boost wellbeing. Even for virtual teams, there are activities you can organize that encourage employees to step away from their desks.

Here are a few excellent office morale boosters to get everyone out of the daily grind:

Escape rooms

Escape rooms have been popular for a while, and for good reason. They’re fun, and they require critical thinking and problem-solving to complete.

Groups must work together to solve puzzles and make connections in order to escape. The feeling of accomplishment after a successful escape is one of the best ways to boost morale at work and bond a team.

Scavenger hunts

Another out-of-office employee morale booster is a scavenger hunt. It’s a surefire way to get everyone excited and engaged in friendly competition.

Scavenger hunts offer fun ways to motivate teams to work toward a common goal. Creative leaders can design their own with almost any theme and location. If you prefer hands-off activities so you can join in on the fun, check out our fully hosted scavenger hunts.

Virtual laughter yoga

Have a virtual team that needs a quick boost? Try Virtual Laughter Yoga. This 1-hour session teaches yoga techniques focused on enhancing health and happiness, deep breathing exercises, and relieving stress. It’s a fantastic morale booster to schedule every few months.

4. Incorporate a wellness program

Sometimes, morale boosters at work need to take a more holistic approach. We all know that a healthy lifestyle leads to improved mood, which leads to better morale and higher productivity.

Investing in work-life balance tends to positively impact each employee’s personal morale, as well as collective workplace morale. Staff members who feel supported on both personal and professional levels will be more inclined to go the extra mile.

If your organization is prioritizing employee well-being, consider a wellness program. These can be tailored for virtual, hybrid, or in-person teams and focus on giving your team the skills and support they need to maintain workplace wellness.

5. Get out of town

The bonding that happens when people step away from their daily routine can supercharge the impact of employee morale boosters. If you can, consider investing in an annual retreat to make your employees feel valued.

Then, schedule some fun team building activities to make the retreat exciting. Who doesn’t love a good sand sculpting competition? Or a day at the museum?

Retreats also help encourage real-life friendships outside of work, which makes for a more enjoyable work life overall. This is especially valuable for remote and hybrid teams that don’t get many opportunities to connect face-to-face. Even a short overnight trip can do wonders for building the kind of trust that’s hard to replicate over a screen.

6. Ask your employees what they want

I already recommended issuing a morale survey, but now I’m suggesting you go a step further and ask what would actually improve their morale. In other words, ask them what office morale boosters would make them happy.

It’s always a good idea to check in with your employees and see what type of events they’d like to participate in. This validates their opinions and makes them more likely to engage in activities since they get to do what they’re genuinely interested in.

7. Prioritize corporate social responsibility

This is one I’m especially passionate about. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is one of the most powerful, and most overlooked, employee morale boosters out there.

When your team gets the chance to give back together, whether it’s building bikes for kids in need, packing meals for a food bank, or supporting a clean water initiative, something shifts. People feel proud of where they work. They connect with their colleagues on a deeper level. And that pride and connection carry right back into the office.

The data backs it up: Gallup’s 2025 State of the Global Workplace report found that global employee engagement has dropped to just 21%, meaning the vast majority of the workforce is disengaged and looking for something more meaningful. And according to Benevity’s 2025 State of Corporate Purpose study, 94% of companies agree that volunteerism is a key driver of business resilience, with volunteering participation growing roughly 11% year over year.

CSR fills that gap. It gives employees a shared sense of purpose that goes beyond the bottom line. At TeamBonding, we offer a range of charitable team building programs that combine giving back with genuine team connection, from our Charity Bike Build to Cooking for a Cause.

If you’re looking for ways to boost morale at work that also make a real difference in your community, CSR is the answer.

Have fun while you boost morale at work!

Remember, the single most important thing about how to build morale at work is to make work fun.

If you don’t put the effort into making work an enjoyable place to be, your employees will get bored and eventually leave. Or worse, they’ll get bored, quiet quit, and waste valuable time.

If you create an inviting atmosphere and take care of your employees both personally and professionally, you’ll see great results. I’ve watched it happen thousands of times, and it never gets old.

Ready to give your office a morale boost? Contact us now for some great team bonding ideas!

Summer comes around once a year, and it doesn’t take much to turn that energy into something special for your team. After decades of designing events at TeamBonding, I’ve seen what happens when you give people a reason to step outside, let loose, and just enjoy being together. The results are almost always the same: more laughter, stronger connections, and a team that comes back to work feeling genuinely recharged.

So if you’re looking for summer work party ideas that go beyond a box of donuts in the break room, keep reading. I’ll share some of my all-time favorites, including a few newer events I’m especially excited about this season.

Why throwing a summer kick-off party is worth it

In the summer, most people want to be outside. After months of cold weather, they’re ready to move around, breathe fresh air, and feel like themselves again. I’ve always said that early summer is one of the best times of year to bring a team together: it’s the season when everybody’s hopeful. You’re coming out of that hibernation state, and people are just happiest to be outdoors.

There’s also something about summer that gives people permission to let loose. No one’s thinking about emails or deadlines when they’re running across a field or laughing their way through a team challenge.

Research backs this up, too. Getting outside improves mental abilities like thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving, while also reducing stress and anxiety. That’s not just good for your team’s wellbeing; it’s good for your business. Pair that with some employee burnout prevention, and you’ve got a compelling case for getting people off their screens and into the sun.

The best outdoor team building activities are the ones that bring out that childlike excitement in people, whether it’s racing around in a scavenger hunt, playing ridiculous games, or just being outside with good people. Here are my top picks.

Summer work party ideas your team will love

1. Fun field day

If it’s been way too long since your team got outside for a proper field day, this is your sign. You just can’t beat the combination of friendly competition, laughter, and soaking up the sun together.

One of my all-time favorite summer work party ideas has always been the Outrageous Games. It’s kind of a corporate Olympic-style event because it’s outdoors and can be held at almost any venue. People get a chance to be kids again: they get to do fun things they don’t normally give themselves permission to do.

The Outrageous Games event is an Olympics-themed field day activity packed with non-athletic fun for everyone. Your team competes head-to-head in ten wild and wacky events designed to build teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.

If you’d prefer a DIY approach, all you need is some outdoor space and a few supplies:

Water balloons and hula hoops for classic warm-weather fun

Tug-of-war ropes for some friendly rivalry

Sack race bags or pillowcases to channel your inner field day champion

Cones and soccer balls for a makeshift obstacle course

Consider offering a prize for the winning team, whether that’s a free lunch, a half-day, or something else entirely. A little extra motivation goes a long way.

2. GOALL!!: a World Cup summer kick-off party

With the 2026 World Cup happening right here in North America this summer, there’s no better time to bring that energy into your workplace. I love tapping into the excitement of what’s happening in the world around us, and right now, football is on everyone’s mind.

GOALL!! is a high-energy team building experience where participants collaborate to run their own football club. Teams kick things off by assigning roles, setting goals, and putting the right people in the right positions, just like a real championship squad. Then they bring their game plans to life through strategy, creative challenges, and fan-style chant-offs.

The energy builds all the way to the final whistle, where scores are tallied and a winning team is crowned. But the real victory, as I always say, is in the connections built along the way. It runs one to two hours and works for groups of 20 or more.

If you’re looking for a summer kick-off party idea that taps into a global moment while building real skills, this one is hard to beat.

3. Ultimate tailgate challenge

There’s something about a tailgate that brings out the best in people. The friendly trash talk, the competitive spirit, the sheer joy of throwing things at other things. The Ultimate Tailgate Challenge takes all of that and turns it into a structured, seriously fun team building event for groups of 25 to 400.

Teams rotate through classic tailgate games like cornhole, ladder ball, Kan Jam, and giant Jenga, competing for the highest scores. A professional DJ keeps the energy up throughout, and a lighthearted closing ceremony wraps everything up with awards and, if you want, prizes.

It plays best outdoors, which makes it a natural fit for a summer work party. And for what it’s worth, client reviews are consistently outstanding. This one is a crowd-pleaser in every sense.

4. Get outside and give back

If you’re looking for a great team summer party idea with a little more meaning behind it, consider combining your summer kickoff with a charitable activity. Almost any game can be set up as a competition where winnings go to a nonprofit of the winning team’s choice, or you can organize a group activity that builds something for a cause.

Some options worth exploring:

Paws for a Cause: Build supplies and care packages for animal shelters

Bike Build: Assemble bikes for kids in need

Healthcare Heroes Scavenger Hunt: A mission-driven scavenger hunt with a meaningful payoff

Operation Cancer Care: Assemble care packages for cancer patients

Giving back while spending time in the sun together can create a sense of fulfillment that a regular party just can’t match. It’s the kind of thing people talk about long after the event is over.

5. The Mystery Bus

This is one of those ideas that sounds a little wild the first time you hear it, and then you realize it’s brilliant. The Mystery Bus transports your team to three to four surprise destinations in and around your city. Nobody knows where they’re going until they get there.

The itinerary always includes at least one culinary adventure, one cultural experience, and one low-key physical activity. Our event team handles every detail: the planning, the logistics, the bus, the host who keeps things lively along the way with trivia and games. All you have to do is show up and enjoy the ride.

For a summer kick-off party, this is especially magical. There’s something about the open road and the unknown that creates instant camaraderie. People who normally wouldn’t talk much suddenly have something to bond over, and by the time the bus pulls back in, they feel like they’ve been on an adventure together. Because they have.

It runs for 5 to 6 hours and is designed for groups of 20 to 100.

6. Organize a scavenger hunt

Who doesn’t love a good scavenger hunt? It’s one of my favorite office party ideas for summer because it’s endlessly flexible and almost universally beloved.

Divide your team into pairs or small groups, hand out a series of clues, and set them loose. A local park makes a great backdrop. Agree on a two- to three-hour time limit and a central meeting spot to reconvene. For something more polished, our Polaroid Scavenger Hunt or High-Tech GPS Scavenger Hunt bring a whole extra level of production and fun.

Cap it off with a team lunch or dinner, and you’ve got a full summer day your team won’t forget.

7. Celebrate a weird summer holiday

This one is a personal favorite because it’s so low-budget and high-return. There are more obscure summer holidays than most people realize, and building a party around one of them gives your team a built-in theme and a guaranteed conversation starter.

When was the last time your office celebrated National Ice Cream Day (July 16) or National Wine and Cheese Day (July 25)? Have your team vote on the most ridiculous holiday they can find, and then plan the event around it. The wackier the better.

This kind of team summer party idea gives everyone a chance to show off their quirkier, more creative sides, which don’t often get much airtime in a regular workday.

Memorial Day means something a little different to everyone. For some, it’s the unofficial start of summer: cookouts, backyard games, and a long weekend with family. For others, it’s a solemn occasion to honor and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country.

When it comes to things to do on Memorial Day at work, the best celebrations manage to hold both of those truths at once. In this guide, we’ve rounded up nine of our favorite Memorial Day work ideas—some meaningful, some just plain fun, and many that are both.

Why Memorial Day matters at work

Memorial Day isn’t just a day off. It’s an opportunity for leaders to bring their teams together around something bigger than the day-to-day grind.

Marking the holiday as a team, even in a small way, signals that your organization values more than productivity. It shows you care about community, history, and the people who made it possible for your employees to work freely.

That kind of culture matters. Employee engagement is directly tied to how connected people feel to their workplace, and shared experiences like a Memorial Day celebration are a simple, powerful way to strengthen those bonds.

It’s also a chance to model the kind of values-driven leadership that employees remember. Taking time to acknowledge a national day of mourning—even briefly nd imperfectly—says something about who you are as an organization.

A brief history of Memorial Day

“This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.”—Elmer Davis

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, was established by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. In his General Order No. 11, issued in 1868, he designated May 30th as a day for decorating the graves of soldiers who died defending their country.

The red poppy has been the American Legion’s official symbol of remembrance since 1920. That was inspired by the World War I poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, which describes poppies blooming over the graves of fallen soldiers in Belgium. Disabled veterans have assembled Buddy Poppies in VA hospitals since 1924, with proceeds supporting veteran rehabilitation and service programs.

Today, Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May, dedicated to honoring all U.S. military personnel who died in service to our country.

9 things to do on Memorial Day at work

Whether you’re planning a full team event or a simple gesture of remembrance, here are nine great ways to observe this holiday with your team.

1. Organize an outdoor team event

One of the most popular things to do on Memorial Day at work is to get everyone outside. The weather is typically beautiful, and an outdoor activity is a natural fit for the holiday’s spirit of togetherness.

Here are a few of our favorites:

Go Give: Charity Challenge—Teams complete GPS-guided challenges that positively impact their community, building camaraderie along the way.

Outrageous Games—A non-athletic, high-energy collection of games perfect for a company picnic or outdoor employee gathering.

Team Chili Cook-off—Teams start with chili basics and barter for extra ingredients by completing fun challenges. Competitive, creative, and delicious.

Cooking for a Cause

Cooking for a Cause is a culinary team building activity that’s built around preparing and enjoying a meal with the rest of your team. You’ll also help your community in a meaningful way by creating donations for a local food bank.

Team Chili Cook-off

This fiery team building favorite combines creativity, resourcefulness, and skill. In the Team Chili Cook-off, each group starts with chili basics like meat and tomatoes, but collecting other ingredients means bartering while completing fun challenges.

Outrageous Games

From the opening ceremony to the closing awards presentation, Outrageous Games is the perfect collection of non-athletic Memorial Day games for your company picnic or employee meeting. Competition has never been more fun!

2. Assemble care packages for active duty military

This is one of the most meaningful Memorial Day work activities you can organize, and it doubles as team building with real-world impact.

Our Operation Military Care program brings teams together to assemble care packages for deployed service members. It’s a hands-on, purposeful activity that your team will genuinely feel good about, and it connects the spirit of the holiday directly to the people it honors.

Consider pairing it with a brief team moment of reflection before you get started. Even just a few words from a leader about who Memorial Day is for and why it matters can make all the difference.

3. Cook a meal for your community

Food has a way of bringing people together, and Cooking for a Cause leans right into that. Teams prepare meals together and donate them to a local food bank, combining the best of culinary team building with genuine community service.

It’s a great option for teams that want a Memorial Day celebration with a service component—and one that keeps the focus on giving back.

4. Attend a local Memorial Day parade

Many cities and towns host Memorial Day parades, often followed by a memorial service at a local cemetery or monument. Encouraging your team to attend—either as a group or individually—is one of the simplest things to do on Memorial Day that still carries real weight.

Send a Memorial Day message to employees in advance, letting them know about local events, and invite anyone who served to share their perspective. It’s a low-lift gesture that means a lot.

5. Buy a poppy

In the days leading up to Memorial Day, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) members collect donations in exchange for red poppies. It takes less than a minute, but it’s a visible, meaningful act of remembrance.

Consider setting up a small donation station in the office or sharing information about where employees can participate. When paired with other Memorial Day work activities, it adds a layer of genuine tribute to the celebration.

6. Observe the National Moment of Remembrance

At 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, Congress asks all Americans to pause for one minute of silence in honor of fallen service members. The time was intentionally chosen to represent the hour when most Americans enjoy their freedom.

If your team is working or gathering that day, pause at 3:00 p.m. together. It costs nothing, takes one minute, and carries a lot of meaning.

7. Fly the flag and decorate with intention

Decorating with red, white, and blue is a classic way to mark the holiday—but there’s an opportunity here to go beyond streamers and tablecloths.

The tradition of flying the U.S. flag at half-staff from dawn until noon on Memorial Day is a longstanding act of respect for fallen soldiers. If your office or venue has a flagpole, consider observing this tradition. Then raise the flag to full-staff at noon—a gesture that honors both remembrance and the living.

8. Thank a veteran

Memorial Day is primarily about those we’ve lost, but it’s also a natural moment to acknowledge the veterans on your team or in your network. A sincere, personal word of thanks—from a manager, a team leader, or the whole group—goes a long way.

If your team wants to do more, Operation Gratitude offers a letter-writing program for soldiers currently deployed. It’s a meaningful activity that can be built into a Memorial Day corporate event or done individually.

9. Share stories and send a team letter

Invite employees to share what Memorial Day means to them—whether they have a personal connection to military service or just a memory tied to the holiday. Collect those reflections and share them internally as a team letter or newsletter piece.

You can even take it a step further by printing the submissions and delivering them to a local veterans’ living center, or emailing them to an organization that serves veterans in your area. It’s a simple, human way to build connection at work while honoring the day.

How to celebrate Memorial Day at work: Tips for leaders

Not sure where to start? Here’s a quick framework for how to celebrate Memorial Day at work in a way that feels genuine, not performative:

Send a Memorial Day message to employees ahead of the holiday—share what’s planned and, just as importantly, what the day means.

Mix the meaningful with the fun. There’s nothing wrong with a cookout or a round of Outrageous Games—the key is pairing it with at least one moment of genuine tribute.

Let your team lead. Ask whether anyone has a personal connection to the holiday and would like to share. You might be surprised by the stories in your own organization.

Keep it inclusive. Not everyone has a military connection, and that’s okay. Focus on gratitude and community rather than assuming shared experience.

The most memorable Memorial Day celebrations at work aren’t the most elaborate—they’re the ones where people feel like the day actually meant something.

Make your Memorial Day celebration one to remember

Whether you’re planning a full team building event or a quieter day of reflection and gratitude, Memorial Day is a meaningful opportunity to bring your team closer together.

And remember: you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. The right activity—whether it’s something charitable, something competitive, or something that simply brings people to the same table—can make this holiday genuinely memorable for your whole team.
