I’ve fallen in love with Halloween team building activities as a way to celebrate spooky season while bonding with employees and coworkers over the years.
As the founder of TeamBonding, you might already know I’m pretty passionate about team building. One thing you might not realize, though, is that I’m also a huge fan of Halloween.
In this guide, I’ll highlight nine of my favorite activities to BOO-st your team’s Halloween spirit and overall morale this year (sorry, couldn’t help myself with that pun).
9 Fun Halloween Team Building Activities for the Workplace
These team building Halloween activities are some of my favorites to spice up company parties in the fall!
Whether you have your sights set on a virtual haunted house and pumpkin carving or you want to step it up a notch with pumpkin racing, you’ll find what you’re looking for on this list.
So, without further ado, my top nine Halloween team building activities:
1. Do a Virtual Pumpkin Carving Class
Carve out some time with your team (the puns continue) with virtual pumpkin carving! It’s an alternative to an in-person pumpkin carving Halloween team building activity for remote and hybrid teams.
This is one of my favorite Halloween virtual events for work because it’s great from start to finish. Your team members will have carving kits delivered to their doors ahead of time, which really amps up the excitement. (I mean, who doesn’t love getting presents?)
Next, they’ll hop on an event hosted by a Master Pumpkin Sculptor, have fun together, and wrap things up with awards and prizes!
Pro tip: This is also a great way to celebrate National Pumpkin Day on October 26th!
2. Compete in Classic Pumpkin Races
Whether you’ve heard of the world-famous Pumpkin Races or not, this one’s always a hit. Our Pumpkin Race is an in-person event where your team will work together to assemble and design pumpkin racers before competing for the Grand Champion title.
This is one of the most fun and unusual Halloween team building ideas your team will ever experience! Trust me.
I’ll never forget the first time we tried Pumpkin Racing. I admit, I was a bit skeptical until I saw teams from a tech company get super invested in the aerodynamic designs and weight distribution of their individual pumpkins—it was like watching Formula 1!
The top two teams had these strategically designed racers that just demolished the rest of the competition. One was lovingly titled the “over-engineered gourd,” and it became a mascot for the rest of the day. I think that was when I knew we’d found a winner!
3. Give Everyone Creepy Treats
This is less of an engaged, hands-on Halloween team building activity and more of a fun gift to your team. No matter how you approach it, you’ll have plenty of tasty cookies, candies, cocktails, and other treats to enjoy after the event!
Whether you’re in-person, virtual, or hybrid, just look for a fun way to provide your team with a wealth of creepy treats, spooky cocktails, and candy platters. You can even make it a Halloween food contest and give a special prize to the winners.
You can find tons of themed recipes on Pinterest if you need some inspiration.
4. Go All Out With Halloween Decor
Not all celebrations have to be active, scheduled events. Sometimes, decorating the office for spooky season is plenty! And nothing says Halloween like some creepy decor around the office (or on your newsletter and socials for virtual teams).
Here are my picks for quick, festive Halloween decor:
- Pumpkins (bonus points if they’re entries from a pumpkin carving contest!)
- Ghosts
- Bats
- Spider webs
- Gravestones
Want to go a step further? Turn the office into a haunted house that your team will get to see on their way out the door on the last workday of October. Just don’t amp up the experience until everyone’s done working so they’re not distracted.
Pro tip: The more glow, the better! And the possibilities are endless with flameless candles.
5. Try A Haunted House Escape Room
Speaking of haunted houses, think your team is brave enough to try a virtual Haunted House Escape Room? I do!
This Halloween team building activity is one of my favorites every year. Your team will compete against each other while solving cryptic clues and completing hilarious photo challenges to be the first to escape the virtual haunted house.
Escape rooms also make awesome Halloween-themed icebreakers since new team members will get to show off their skills as integral parts of the equation.
6. Catapult and Smash Some Pumpkins
Okay, I know this isn’t a normal Halloween team building activity, but we all need to blow off some steam every now and then. Workdays can be draining, so what better way to let loose and prevent burnout than catapulting pumpkins and watching them explode?
Trust me, our Halloween version of Catapult to Success will be sure to give your team a day they will remember, whether you’re hosting the event for Halloween or just as a Fall team building idea.
This whole thing started in 2017 when PEAK Scientific got in touch with us about a team building program. They saw our Catapult to Success program and raised us catapulting pumpkins—pure genius.
You’ll use household materials to build a launching mechanism for mini pumpkins before competing to see who can fling theirs the furthest and be crowned champion. It’s an experience like no other, and it’ll keep your teams talking for years to come.
7. Solve a Murder Mystery
Few things are spookier than putting your team’s detective skills to the test to find a killer. In our Virtual Murder Mystery Dinner, In the Company of Killers, you and your team will do just that.
It starts with a virtual cocktail hour where you and your team will meet four of the most outlandish characters around. Clues and motives start popping up. Then, suddenly, the murder! And the fun really begins.
You could also try our Virtual Crime Scene Investigation, where your team will become an elite CSI unit tasked with sorting through the evidence to figure out who committed a crime, how they did it, and why.
Regardless of which you pick, this Halloween virtual game for work will have your team questioning suspects, evaluating clues, and putting your best problem-solving skills to work with our state-of-the-art virtual crime scene. Spooky right?
I might be a bit biased, but
I highly recommend trying this one! These really hold a special place in my heart, partially because my first venture was The Mystery Cafe, a murder mystery theatre that did weekly dinner shows in a Boston bar’s basement.
This was before murder mystery dinners were trending, and my first show was Death and Taxes (a comedy about corporate greed).
We transformed that dark, old basement into a fully immersive crime scene, smashed enough mirrors to bring a lifetime of bad luck, and took down towering 8-foot doors to create custom sets that bore no resemblance to the basement bar.
8. Have Fun With a Halloween Scavenger Hunt
Ah, scavenger hunts—they’re such fun experiences that’ll take you right out of your daily life. It’s no wonder that they’re some of our most popular Halloween icebreaker games!
Despite how much of an escape it is, the thrill of a scavenger hunt fosters team spirit, encourages collaboration, and boosts problem-solving among colleagues.
Your team members will immerse themselves in a Halloween-themed adventure that could range from a zombie apocalypse in Zombie Rising to chasing down monsters in the Monster Mash Dash.
Any of our Halloween scavenger hunts are sure to add a touch of mystery and excitement to the workplace this fall, and they always make for memorable and enjoyable experiences for everyone involved.
9. Compete With a Quickfire Halloween Game
Collaborate, communicate, and conquer with Quickfire Halloween! This is more than an app-based Halloween team building activity—it’s an experience that’ll ignite your creativity and spooky season spirit!
Your team will conquer a series of thrilling Halloween challenges, like pumpkin-themed games, spooky makeup, trivia, dance-offs, and so much more. There’s a challenge for every Halloween enthusiast!
