#MusicMondays: A Song About Being A Role Model – Shy Away by Twenty One Pilot

This week’s tune is a song about being a role model and highlights the relationship and experience of being an older sibling.

A Song About Being a Role Model

“Shy Away” – Twenty One Pilots

Twenty One Pilots is an American musical duo from Colombus, Ohio. The band consists of vocalist Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun. They are best known for the hit singles “Ride” and “Stressed Out” which received a Grammy Award in 2009. They recently released the song “Shy Away” in April 2021. The new single is about being a role model and highlights the relationship and experience of being an older sibling. It is about the difficulty of an older brother to no only try to figure out their own purpose but also witness someone they love trying to find a purpose. And how being that influential figure in a younger sibling’s life affects your own. This song resonates with a lot of listeners who have younger brothers and sisters and know what it’s like to be that role model figure.

“…When I get home. Boy, you better not be there, you’re long gone”

Lyrics

When I get home
You better not be there, we’re placing bets you won’t
Shed your modesty
And the only thing to leave behind is your own skin
On the floor
Don’t you shy away
Manifest a ceiling when you shy away
Searching for that feeling
Just like an “I love you” (ooh, ooh)
That isn’t words (ooh, ooh)
Like a song he wrote, that’s never heard
Don’t you (sh)
When you get home
You barely recognize the pictures they put in a frame
‘Cause you shed your modesty
Don’t circle the track
Take what you have
And leave your skin on the floor
Don’t you shy away
Manifest a ceiling when you shy away
Searching for that feeling
Just like an “I love you” (ooh, ooh)
That isn’t words (ooh, ooh)
Like a song he wrote, that’s never heard
When I get home
Boy, you better not be there, you’re long gone
Shed your modesty
Don’t circle the track
Just break the cycle in half
And leave your skin on the floor
Don’t you shy away
Manifest a ceiling when you shy away
Searching for that feeling
Just like an “I love you” (ooh, ooh)
That isn’t words (ooh, ooh)
Like a song he wrote
That’s never heard
That’s never heard
And I love you
There isn’t words
Like a song he wrote
That’s never heard
Don’t you shy away
