This week’s tune is about finding joy in the small things regardless of how difficult life may be at the moment.
A Song About Finding Happiness
U2 is an Irish rock band from Dublin formed in 1976. Their song lyrics often have personal and sociopolitical themes which are enhanced by the constant spiritual imagery. U2 has released 14 studio albums and has sold over 150 million records, making them one of the world’s best-selling music artists. U2 released the hit “Beautiful Day” in 2000. They wanted to tune to differ from their typical beats of the 90s. The song is about finding joy in the small things in life. Regardless of how difficult life is, or if we have experienced loss, we have to appreciate the small things that we have left. Just like a flower that can thrive in inhospitable conditions, humans can also survive and persevere during hard times. This song is an important reminder for us to appreciate all of the small and seemingly meaningless things in our lives.
“…It’s a Beautiful Day. Don’t let it get away”
Lyrics
Shoots up through the stony ground
There’s no room
No space to rent in this town
And the reason that you had to care
The traffic is stuck
And you’re not moving anywhere
To take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand
In return for grace
Sky falls, you feel like
It’s a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away
But you’ve got no destination
You’re in the mud
In the maze of her imagination
Even if that doesn’t ring true
You’ve been all over
And it’s been all over you
Don’t let it get away
It’s a beautiful day (Oooh, ooh)
Take me to that other place
Teach me love
I know I’m not a hopeless case
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the oil fields at first light
And see the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colors came out
Day, Day
Don’t let it get away
Beautiful day
Take me to that other place
Reach me
I know I’m not a hopeless case
What you don’t know, you can feel it somehow
What you don’t have, you don’t need it now
Don’t need it now
Was a beautiful day
