Skills-Based Volunteering FAQ
Skills-based volunteering is a form of corporate volunteering where employees use their professional expertise—like marketing, communication, design, operations, or strategic planning—to help nonprofits solve real organizational challenges. Instead of general volunteer tasks, participants work with a nonprofit’s background materials and problem statements to collaborate, ideate, and deliver actionable solutions. This type of volunteering benefits both the nonprofit, which gains high-value expertise, and the team, which strengthens leadership, collaboration, communication, and critical-thinking skills while making a meaningful impact in the community.
According to Points of Light, 87% of employees say skill-based volunteering helps them develop work-related skills, and companies that support it see many benefits like higher engagement, retention, and purpose alignment across teams.
The experience culminates in team presentations, where each group shares its insights and recommendations for the nonprofit. The result is a powerful exchange of perspectives and expertise: nonprofits receive valuable strategic support, and participants walk away energized, connected, and motivated by the difference they made, together.
Skills-based volunteering agencies can help you connect your employees with nonprofits in need of their specific skill sets. They coordinate with the nonprofit on which volunteer work is needed and when, so you simply need to show up on volunteer day with your team.
