A One-of-a-Kind Team Building Request
When a client approached TeamBonding with a highly specific vision for a charitable team building experience, there wasn’t an existing program that fit their needs.
They wanted teams to design, build, and decorate garden planters that would ultimately be donated to a nonprofit partner already selected by the client. The experience needed to be hands-on, collaborative, creative, and meaningful while still being easy to execute at scale for a large group.
Rather than adapting the idea into an existing format, TeamBonding made the decision to build something entirely new.
Bringing the Vision to Life
Drawing inspiration from the structure of the existing Little Team Library program, TeamBonding designed a fully customized experience centered around building and decorating raised garden planters for donation.
Teams worked together to construct and personalize their planters, then participated in companion planting activities, selecting seed combinations designed to grow well together and reflect thoughtful planning and collaboration. The completed planters were then donated to Tiger Mountain Foundation, a nonprofit focused on urban agriculture and community empowerment.
Refining the Experience for the Future
Behind the scenes, the program required significant creative problem-solving. Early versions involved transporting nearly a ton of soil to venues, coordinating fragile live-plant shipments, and managing last-minute replacements when plants arrived damaged. While none of these challenges were visible to participants, they highlighted the complexity of bringing the concept to life at scale.
Rather than treating the event as a one-time custom build, TeamBonding refined the experience over time. The program evolved into what is now Productive Planters. This streamlined, scalable version preserves the creativity and charitable impact while eliminating logistical challenges like onsite soil handling and live plant transportation.
Today, teams build and decorate planters, learn about companion planting, and prepare seeded contributions that are completed in partnership with the receiving nonprofit.
A Lasting Win for Teams and Communities
The event was a strong success with both the client and participants. Teams fully embraced the hands-on, collaborative nature of the experience, and the finished planters created a meaningful and lasting connection to the cause they were supporting.
Feedback consistently reflected high engagement, strong enjoyment of the competitive and creative elements, and appreciation for the purpose-driven structure of the experience.
Today, Productive Planters stands as a clear example of TeamBonding’s ability to transform a highly specific client vision into a repeatable, scalable program. What began as a custom solution has grown into a signature experience that continues to help teams connect, collaborate, and give back in meaningful ways!
