Company Culture: The Importance of a Strong Work Culture

Company culture is one of the most important aspects of any successful organization to have. This culture can influence and be influenced by many things including the type of communication within an organization, how you show appreciation for your employees and the standards you hold them to as well. Read our list of elements that make up a great work culture, as well as why it’s so important for your company’s growth.

Company Culture

What are the components of a good culture in the workplace?

According to John Coleman of the Havard Business Review, there are six components that make up a great corporate culture:

(1) Vision:

A vision is a representation of your mission statement. What is it that you want to accomplish with your product or service? How will this product and service help your prospective customers? It can be a simple phrase that will help you show your purpose to your employees, partners, and customers.

(2) Values:

Values are the core of every company’s culture, and they are built on your vision. As part of your belief system, values have the power to shape the work culture with the guidelines on the way of thinking and acting needed to achieve the company vision.

(3) Practices:

Practices are where the values can really be enclosed in your company culture. They reference more day-to-day operations and how your organization operates. These can include anything from how you treat your employees, to how you handle problems with customers.

(4) People:

What kind of people you hire can make or break your company. Your employees are on the frontlines, constantly communicating with customers. The people you choose to work for you should be representatives and executives of the values set by the company vision.

(5) Narrative:

A narrative is a story you are trying to tell to prospective and current customers. It is your selling point. This story often aligns with a mission statement.

(6) Place:

The environment in which people work is also an important part of every company’s culture. This is related to both the geographical location of the company, as well as the interior organization of the space your employees spend time in. Think of place as a chance to creatively represent and bring your work culture to life.

What does your company culture look like?

Take Your Test Here

What does it mean to be truly authentic? How can you as an organization find that balance between authenticity vs. perfection? Authenticity is defined as being genuine with a clearly defined purpose. This purpose stems from a company’s mission statement and filters down through your practices, people, and ultimately your narrative. Furthermore, the balance between authenticity and perfection lies in maintaining your values and beliefs without compromising what made you authentic in the first place.

A module we embrace here at TeamBonding is that of Facebook’s culture:

“We encourage people to be bold. Our open culture keeps everyone informed and allows people to move around and solve the problems they care about most. We work in small teams and move fast to develop new products, constantly iterating and improving. The phrase ‘this journey is 1% finished’ is posted on our walls, reminding us that we’ve only begun to fulfill our mission to make the world more open and connected.”

Within Facebook’s mission statement you can see all of the six components Coleman stated are essential in great company culture.  Their vision is clearly stated as they want to make the world more open and connected. How will they practice this? By involving their employees through immersive projects that matter to them. The employees are also motivated by the phrase that is posted on their walls, “this journey is 1% finished”, meaning that there is always room for growth and innovation for new ideas. This way, they are reminded of many elements that are an important part of each culture in the workplace, through the environment they work in.
