The original founders of the improv troupe, the Upright Citizens Brigade – Matt Walsh, Ian Roberts, Matt Besser and Amy Poehler – have written a manual on the art of improvisational comedy. It doesn’t only apply to acting, though – it applies to any situation where individuals must work together.Contrary to what you may think, there actually ARE rules to improv. It’s not just as simple as saying and doing the first thing that comes to mind; there’s a method to the madness – the founders of the Upright Citizens Brigade give detailed insight into this in the manual.
“There is a common misconception that improv is a whimsical or lazy art form,” the authors write in the introduction. “In reality, no matter how much fun they are having onstage, great improvisers are working together while adhering to a clear set of guidelines.”
