Burnout is real, and it’s costing teams everywhere their best work. Whether you’re grinding through back-to-back meetings or quietly dreading Monday mornings, workplace wellbeing deserves your full attention. And yet, for most people, it stays at the bottom of the to-do list. According to Wellhub’s 2025 State of Work-Life Wellness Report, 89% of employees say they’ll only consider employers that prioritize their wellbeing when searching for a new role. That number tells you everything.

I’m Dane Robinson, facilitator at TeamBonding, former D1 football champion at the University at Buffalo, and NASM certified personal trainer. I’ve spent my career helping athletes and corporate teams perform at their absolute best, and I can tell you from experience: the fundamentals of peak performance are the same whether you’re on the field or in the office.

In this article, I’m sharing 11 practical, actionable health and wellness tips for the workplace that work for in-person, remote, and hybrid teams alike. These are the habits that move the needle on mental health, energy, and productivity, no matter where you work.

11 workplace wellbeing tips to boost health and performance

Let’s be clear: workplace wellbeing isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the foundation everything else is built on. The Great Resignation showed us what happens when companies ignore it. So let’s make sure you’re not leaving these easy wins on the table.

1. Ask about a wellness program or stipend

If your company offers a wellness program or stipend, use it. If they don’t, advocate for one. Many modern companies now provide employees with an annual budget for wellness expenses. Here are a few examples of what you can put it toward:

Gym memberships

Workout equipment

Meditation apps

Ergonomic office furniture

Talk therapy

These programs incentivize employees to prioritize their mental and physical wellness. Companies with wellness stipends usually offer anywhere from $500 to $3,000 annually.

Staying healthy while working from home matters just as much as it does in the office, and plenty of these programs are designed with remote workers in mind. If yours doesn’t offer anything yet, bringing this idea to leadership is worth it.

2. Eat your lunch away from the computer

Here’s a play I run with every team I work with: step away from the desk at lunch. No exceptions.

Giving your brain a break from work is one of the simplest and most underrated wellness tips for employees. Taking mini breaks has repeatedly been shown to increase well-being and performance. Trust me, there’s a reason this is one of the most long-standing health and wellness tips for the workplace everywhere.

So next time you’re about to eat at your keyboard, get up and take your daily lunch break somewhere else. Try a quick walk outside, a few laughs with your favorite standup clip, or just a quiet view through the window. Pair this with tip three for extra benefits.

3. Get outside every day

According to Harvard Business Review, taking breaks to enjoy nature helps employees feel happier and more productive. Fresh air and sunlight do more for your focus and mood than most people give them credit for.

Here are a few wellness tips for the workplace that’ll help you get some outdoor time in:

Work from home? Take a short walk around the block, with or without the dog.

Lunchtime? Sit on a park bench and eat away from your screens.

Bad weather? Watch the rain from a window while you let your thoughts settle.

Consider asking your employer about outdoor workspaces so everyone can benefit from this simple workplace wellness tip. Or just grab a coworker and head outside together to double up on the social benefits.

4. Add some greenery to your workspace

This is one of those health and wellness tips for the workplace that’s as stylish as it is effective. Adding plants to your desk or office can reduce stress levels, improve productivity, increase comfort, and make a real difference in overall workplace wellbeing.

You don’t need a green thumb either. Here are some easy-care options to start with:

Spider plants

Snake plants

Peace lilies

Pothos

Jade plants

Air plants

Lucky bamboo

Not into plant care? Research shows that artificial plants deliver real mental and physical health benefits too. No excuses.

5. Try daily meditation

I know what you’re thinking: meditation isn’t exactly in the playbook for ex-football players. But hear me out. Numerous studies have proven that meditation offers significant mental and physical health benefits, from reducing tension and anxiety to giving your brain the full reset it needs to perform at its best.

Even two minutes at the start of your day can help you come into your work with a clear, focused mind. Try a meditation app, a guided YouTube session, or just a timer and your breath. Whatever works for you is the right answer.

For a team-wide option, TeamBonding’s Meditainment programs integrate seamlessly into meetings, helping everyone leave refreshed and recharged. It’s also a great moment to share your favorite wellness tips for employees with the whole group.

6. Get physical activity every day

As a NASM certified trainer who spent years competing at the collegiate and professional level, this one is non-negotiable for me. If the furthest walk of your day is from your desk to the kitchen, it’s time to make a change.

Harvard Health recommends at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. And the research backs it up: physical activity boosts productivity, lowers blood pressure, improves mood, and adds years to your life. Here are some indoor options to get you moving:

Start your day with a 30-minute workout or dance session to spike your energy and mood.

Do a guided yoga video in the morning or evening to unwind.

Try laughter yoga for a fun, stress-busting workout you can do from anywhere.

Don’t forget to keep moving throughout the day, too. Quick stretches for your neck, shoulders, and back every hour go a long way. Stand up every 30 minutes, even if it’s just for a moment.

The key is finding movement you enjoy and can stick with. Athletes don’t train every day because they have to: they do it because they’ve built a system around it. The same principle applies at work. Start with one habit, be consistent, and build from there.

7. Listen to your favorite music

Listening to music at work is linked to better performance and higher employee satisfaction. As someone who has used music as a motivation and coaching tool for years, I can confirm: it’s a powerful team building tool hiding in plain sight.

The next time you’re running low on motivation, put on your favorite high-energy track and watch what happens. It can flip your entire mood in about three minutes flat.

Create a dedicated work playlist for different moods and tasks, and share it with your team to stay connected. It’s one of the easiest wellness tips for employees that also builds camaraderie in a low-effort way.

Click here to discover motivating and fun songs for work!

8. Socialize with coworkers

If you’re part of a remote or hybrid team, intentional connection is essential for workplace wellbeing. According to Summa Health, socializing reduces stress, boosts mood, improves quality of life and cognitive function, and lowers the risk of chronic disease.

Make a point to check in with your coworkers, whether that’s via a Zoom lunch, a virtual happy hour, or just a quick message to see how someone’s doing. Those small touchpoints add up faster than you’d expect.

Staying connected is one of the most underrated workplace wellness tips, especially in a remote world. And if your team rarely gets to spend time together in person, a shared team experience can do more for morale and connection than a dozen emails.

9. Set healthy boundaries to avoid burnout

Every champion knows when to call a timeout. Setting limits and maintaining healthy boundaries are among the most important wellness tips for the workplace. This is especially true for remote workers, who are at higher risk of burnout and have more difficulty separating work from rest.

Protecting your work-life balance means taking active steps to end the workday. Close the office door. Shut the computer down completely. Set your status to out of office and mean it.

If coworkers or managers aren’t respecting your boundaries, have a direct conversation. Communicate when you’re unavailable and hold that line. Nobody performs well without recovery time.

In football, overtraining is just as damaging as undertraining. The same logic applies here. Protecting your downtime isn’t weakness: it’s strategy.

10. Use all your vacation days

Vacation days aren’t a luxury; they’re a recovery tool. Every great team needs downtime to come back stronger, and so does every great employee.

Your PTO is there to help you decompress, reduce burnout, and come back sharper than you left. Make it a goal to use every vacation or PTO day you have. (And skip the quiet vacationing trap: being fully present on your time off matters for your mental health as much as taking the time itself.)

11. Focus on employee recognition

If you’re a manager or business owner, here’s something I’ve seen firsthand on teams of all kinds: people perform better when they feel seen. Recognition is one of the most direct levers you have for improving workplace wellbeing, and it costs a lot less than you might think.

Sharing wellness tips for the workplace is a great start, but genuine workplace wellbeing goes deeper than a checklist. Offering access to wellness resources and recognizing milestones with meaningful gestures keeps employee wellbeing front and center. Positive affirmations through milestone gifts or standout customer reviews are great ways to keep spirits high across the team.

To understand how your team prefers to be recognized, try sending out an employee recognition survey to shape your company’s reward and recognition approach.

Build a culture of workplace wellbeing starting today

These workplace wellness tips aren’t complicated. They’re the fundamentals, and the fundamentals always win. I’ve seen that truth play out on football fields, in fitness studios, and in corporate conference rooms.

Whether you’re a team member looking to take better care of yourself or a leader trying to build a healthier, more engaged team, start small and stay consistent. Pick two or three of these wellness tips for employees and commit to them for 30 days. Adjust your schedule, prioritize your well-being, and watch the results compound over time.

Most teams think they’re connected because they show up to the same meetings, share the same Slack channels, and hit the same quarterly goals. But that’s not employee connection. That’s proximity.

I’ve been running TeamBonding for over 35 years, and one thing I’ve learned is that real connection at work, the kind that makes people want to show up and give their best, takes intentional effort. And far too few leaders prioritize it.

According to a recent Gallup poll, only 23% of employees are engaged and connected at work. That number should stop every leader in their tracks. A team built on strong employee connection is more innovative, more collaborative, and more productive. People stay longer, show up more fully, and lift each other up when things get hard.

So why does meaningful workplace connection feel so hard to build? In this article, I’m sharing 12 strategies I’ve seen work, for leaders who want to move beyond proximity and create the kind of corporate connections that change culture.

Before we dive in: every team is different. Not every strategy here will fit your context perfectly, so keep your specific workplace dynamics in mind as you consider which ones to apply first. The goal is to find what works for your people and build from there.

12 ways to build meaningful employee connection at work

1. Communicate openly and regularly

If you can’t communicate freely with the people around you, you can’t connect with them. Effective communication is the foundation every strong relationship is built on, and it’s the first place leaders should focus when they want to improve connection in the workplace.

Promote an open-door policy. Create spaces where people can voice concerns, share ideas, and bring up mistakes without fear. Use multiple channels: one-on-ones, team meetings, Slack, whatever works for your team.

At TeamBonding, we use Slack channels for everything from client wins to weekend photos. Birthday shoutouts, football pools, “what did you do this weekend?” threads: all of it helps people show up as full humans, not just job titles.

2. Listen actively

Listening is a form of respect. And when people feel genuinely heard, they feel more connected. Active employee listening means being truly present in a conversation, not just waiting for your turn to respond.

It’s one of the simplest things you can do as a leader, and one of the most impactful. When people know you care what they think, they open up more. And when people open up, real connections form.

3. Empower employees

One of the fastest ways to deepen connection is to trust people with real responsibility. When you give employees the freedom to make decisions and own outcomes, you send a clear message: we believe in you.

Empowerment builds confidence. More confident employees are more comfortable around their teammates, more willing to take creative risks, and more engaged in the work itself. Pair that with strong interpersonal relationships in the workplace, and you’ve got a team that genuinely supports each other.

4. Recognize and appreciate contributions

Recognition is one of the most underused tools in any leader’s toolkit. Recognizing your employees for their work, celebrating their wins, and appreciating their contributions builds connection in a way few other things can match.

Recognition says: I see you. I value what you bring to this team. That’s the kind of message that creates a positive environment where building connections at work comes naturally.

Don’t wait for annual reviews. Shout out great work in the moment, in team meetings, in Slack, wherever it lands with impact.

5. Foster a collaborative environment

Collaboration is one of the most organic paths to employee connection. When people work through challenges together, they see each other differently. They build trust through shared effort, shared wins, and yes, shared frustrations.

Creating that culture means more than assigning group projects. It means normalizing asking for help. It means fostering teamwork as a value, not just a tactic. And it means leading by example: being the first to ask for input and the first to share credit.

6. Emphasize inclusion

If someone on your team doesn’t feel included, they can’t feel truly connected. The two go hand in hand.

Putting real emphasis on DEIB isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s a direct investment in your team. When people who wouldn’t normally work together get the opportunity to collaborate, new relationships form. Inclusion can also help people step outside their comfort zones, where the most meaningful relationships tend to develop.

Navigating diversity and inclusion in a real, lasting way takes intention. But the payoff in terms of connected employees is significant.

7. Provide opportunities for professional development

When employees feel like they’re growing, they feel more invested. And more invested employees are more connected to their work, to their team, and to the organization’s mission.

Professional development opportunities also send a clear message: we’re committed to you for the long haul. Corporate training programs create shared learning experiences that build bonds alongside skills, which is one of the reasons they’re such a strong lever for building connections at work.

8. Support work-life balance

Tired, burnt-out employees don’t have the bandwidth to connect with anyone. They’re just trying to get through the day.

That’s why supporting healthy work-life balance isn’t a “nice to have.” It’s a prerequisite for strong employee connectivity. Respect people’s time. Encourage them to unplug. Check in regularly to see how they’re doing.

Transparency at the leadership level sets the tone for the whole organization. If employees see you taking time off and protecting your own boundaries, they’ll feel more comfortable doing the same.

9. Promote employee wellness

Wellness and connection are deeply linked. When people are stressed and depleted, they withdraw. When they feel supported in their wellbeing, they open up.

Employee wellbeing initiatives go a long way toward showing your team you care. At TeamBonding, we have a wellness app that gives employees discounted gym memberships and access to meditation tools. Our teams also take “mental health walks” when the weather cooperates: small gestures that have a real impact on how supported people feel.

And if you’re thinking about the bottom line: supporting employee wellness drives retention, reduces absenteeism, and helps fight boreout before it takes hold. It pays off.

10. Create social bonds through shared experiences

Here’s something I’ve seen play out over and over again. People can work side by side for years and still barely know each other. They know each other’s job titles. They know how to collaborate on a deliverable. But they don’t know who that person really is.

I was reminded of this recently when we ran a team building program for a fully remote tech company. Brilliant people, highly efficient, great at their jobs. But when we asked how often they interacted beyond Slack messages and project updates, the answer was: not much.

We brought them together for a live, interactive experience: collaboration, problem-solving, a little healthy competition, and a lot of laughter. At the end, one participant said something that has stuck with me: “I’ve worked with these people for two years. This is the first time I feel like I actually know them.”

That’s not something AI can deliver. And no amount of efficient project management replaces it.

That’s exactly why shared experiences matter so much. When your team does something together outside the usual workflow, something that lets people be playful, creative, and a little vulnerable, real bonds form. Plato said it best: “You learn more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.”

Team building is how we create those moments. Events like The Prosthetic Hand Project, The Donation Station, and the Charity Bike Build give teams something meaningful to do together. The bonds that form aren’t superficial; they carry right back into the workplace and change how people work together every day.

One of the best examples I can point to is our own internal CSR team here at TeamBonding. They’re a tight-knit group that not only creates volunteer-driven events for clients but also organizes bonding experiences for themselves, from afternoon tea parties to attending each other’s weddings. That team has a significantly lower turnover rate than the rest of the company, and I believe it’s directly tied to how well they know and care for each other.

Fun isn’t a perk. It’s part of the strategy. And the most meaningful workplace connections don’t form in performance reviews. They form in the moments between the work.

11. Lead by example

Everything on this list starts with you. You can put policies and programs in place, but if you’re not modeling the behavior yourself, employees won’t follow.

Want more employee connection on your team? Start showing up differently. Invite people into conversations. Share what you did last weekend. Take time off and make it visible. Be the first person to ask how someone’s really doing, not just how the project is going.

When I noticed one of our earliest team members, our Director of Corporate Training, Jayne, was disengaged and exhausted, I didn’t wait for her annual review. I bought her a ticket to visit her family in the UK. That’s what empathy looks like in practice, and it’s the kind of culture that keeps people connected for the long haul. Many TeamBonding team members have been with us for 20-plus years because they feel seen and genuinely cared for.

If you care about your coworkers as people, you care more about the work. too. Leadership is about creating an environment where people love coming to work: where they feel valued, energized, and part of something bigger than themselves.

12. Measure, listen, and adapt

No two workplaces are the same. What deepens employee connection on one team might land differently on another. That means you need to track what’s working and be willing to change course.

Solicit regular feedback. Use surveys. Watch engagement levels. If something’s not working, adapt. At TeamBonding, our executive team reviews culture initiatives every year in close collaboration with department managers, shares the process openly with employees, and actively invites candid feedback.

The only way to keep improving is to keep listening. Learning how to improve connection in the workplace is an ongoing process, not a one-time fix.

Start building employee connection with TeamBonding

Employee connection isn’t a box you check once and move on. It’s a daily practice and a leadership commitment.

The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone. At TeamBonding, we’ve spent over 35 years helping organizations build stronger, more connected employees through the power of play. With 200+ customizable programs available in person, virtually, and in hybrid formats, we make it easy to create the shared experiences that turn colleagues into a real team.

Ready to strengthen employee connection across your organization? Get in touch with our team today and let’s build something great together.

When you swap your commute for a ten-second walk to your home office, it sounds like a win. And in many ways, it is. But according to Gallup, nearly 80% of employees whose jobs can be done remotely are now working either hybrid or fully remote, and with that shift comes a whole new set of challenges: blurred work-life boundaries, too much screen time, not enough movement, and a social life that can quietly fade to the background. The wellness tips for working from home that worked for office life don’t always translate.

That’s where I come in. I’m Jayne Hannah, Director of Corporate Training and Virtual Events at TeamBonding, and I’ve spent years helping distributed teams stay connected, energized, and engaged. In that role, I’ve seen firsthand how remote work wellness can either thrive or quietly unravel depending on the daily habits people build (or don’t).

Daily routines and consistent habits provide structure and discipline to everyday life. Having a set wake-up time, lunch, and after-work routine can help reduce stress and anxiety and increase overall health and wellness. Below, I’m sharing 10 practical wellness tips for working from home so you can feel your best, stay productive, and actually enjoy the flexibility that remote work is supposed to offer.

10 wellness tips for working from home

Whether you’re a seasoned remote worker or still finding your footing, it’s easy to let healthy habits slip when home and office blur into one. These wellness tips for working from home aren’t about overhauling your life overnight. They’re small, practical changes that add up over time and make a real difference in how you feel, focus, and show up every day.

1. Develop healthy sleeping habits

Working from home means you no longer have to plan time for your morning commute. Your longest journey will probably be from your bedroom to the living room. As a result, many people have taken advantage of the option to sleep in. However, this may also mean going to sleep much later than usual.

Avoid waking up 10 minutes before your workday starts. Instead, to improve your home office wellness, set an alarm each morning and give yourself plenty of time to get ready before logging in. That also means going to bed at a reasonable hour. If you used to wind down by 10 pm when you were heading into the office, try to keep to that schedule to maintain a consistent sleep pattern.

2. Plan your meals and eat healthy snacks

Unlimited access to food and snacks can easily lead to poor eating habits while working from home. Spending the day at home can tempt you to constantly head into the kitchen for a snack or to order out instead of cooking lunch.

There’s nothing wrong with snacks, but try to avoid the unhealthy potato chips and grab some fruit or nuts instead. Plan out your meals as though you’re going into the office. If you normally meal prep on Sundays and find that makes it easier than finding the motivation to cook during your lunch break, then continue with that routine. Creating healthy eating habits is essential to your overall wellness while working remotely.

3. Don’t work too much

Working from home can definitely make it easy to stay logged in late into the night. Not going into a physical office can make it difficult to put boundaries on how many hours we work every day. An unhealthy habit that’s common while working from home is clocking in way too many hours and not knowing when to disconnect.

It’s important to track your hours and to step away from your computer screen a few times a day to eat lunch, go for a walk, or grab a coffee. Although you won’t be able to leave a physical building at the end of your shift, establish a ritual to represent the end of your workday. Whether that’s something as small as putting away your laptop or closing the door to your office, it’s important to start the healthy habit of disconnecting.

It’s also important to take the PTO that’s offered to you, even if you think you can work while on vacation. This is called quiet vacationing, and it’s just as damaging to your mental health as it is to your team’s progress!

4. Plan and schedule your day

Just because our days seem monotonous doesn’t mean we shouldn’t make a plan. Waking up without a schedule will most likely lead to feelings of anxiety, stress, and underperformance. Try creating a general timeline for yourself throughout the day.

Simply buying a planner to schedule calls, meals, and any workouts or social activities you’ve planned will go a long way toward maintaining your mental health while working from home. Doing this will improve your productivity, prevent you from feeling overwhelmed, and give you more control over your day. It’s one of the simplest wellness ideas for remote employees, and the impact is significant.

5. Limit your screen time

We spend most of our days either on our laptops, phones, or tablets. After working in front of a screen all day, many people tend to disconnect by watching a show on Netflix or spending hours catching up on social media. Apart from the fact that staring at screen lights all day can negatively affect our eyesight, it’s also an unhealthy habit to get into.

Make it a point to give yourself a break from screen time after finishing your workday. Screen limits are among the most overlooked wellness tips for working from home, but they protect your eyes, your sleep, and your long-term wellbeing. Going for a walk, practicing yoga and meditation, or doing some household errands are great ways to stay healthy while working from home, and your overall mental health will thank you for it.

6. Nurture your social life

At the start of the shift to remote work, it was difficult to adjust to not seeing our friends and coworkers every day. Now that many of us have grown accustomed to having less personal contact, we can easily fall into the habit of keeping to ourselves too often.

Although we can’t always meet up with friends and coworkers in person, that doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your social life entirely. While working from home, try to schedule monthly or weekly online game nights, wine tastings, and scavenger hunts with your friends and coworkers. It’ll break up the monotony of your work week and give you something to look forward to. As someone who runs virtual programming for teams across the country, I can tell you: these connections matter more than people realize.

7. Get ready and dress up

A consequence of working from home is putting less importance on physical appearance and hygiene. Remote workers can get into the unhealthy habit of working in their pajamas all day and not showering or brushing their hair.

Taking the time every morning to get dressed will increase your mood and self-confidence, which leads to a more productive day. Pick out your daily outfits just as you would if you were going into the office. Despite the comfort, try to avoid loungewear as much as possible. Choose one or two days during the week where you commit to a business casual outfit. And regardless of what you decide to wear, don’t skip your usual shower!

8. How to stay active while working from home

This one’s important for both your body and your mind. Before working from home, you may have had a specific workout routine before or after office hours. Now that most of us find ourselves sitting at a desk for the majority of the day, it’s become more difficult to reestablish that habit. For many people, the most exercise they do is walking from one room to another.

Here are a few easy ways to get more movement into your day:

Schedule online workout classes before or after work so they’re a fixed commitment.

Create a YouTube playlist of quick exercise videos you can do during breaks.

Take a walk around the block during your lunch break for fresh air and a mental reset.

Use a standing desk or take five-minute standing breaks every hour to get blood flowing.

Figuring out how to stay active while working from home doesn’t have to mean a full gym routine. Even small bursts of movement throughout the day add up and make a real difference for your energy and focus.

9. Pay attention to your mental and physical health

Working from home can make it seem difficult to take a sick day or a mental health day. We may feel guilty taking time off since we could technically work from our beds if we aren’t feeling well. However, it’s important to be aware of our body’s needs and rest when required.

If you’re feeling ill, take the day or at least half the day to rest and recover. It’s equally important to recognize when you’re feeling mentally worn out. Create an open dialogue with your employer about what would help your mental health while working from home. That’ll make it easier to ask for the day off when you aren’t feeling 100%.

10. Create a designated workspace

One of the most underrated wellness tips for working from home is this: your workspace matters. It’s very easy to get into the bad habit of working from your bed every day. Despite how convenient and comfortable it may seem at first, over time, it’ll reduce your productivity and increase your back pain.

Instead of succumbing to the temptation to work from your bed, create a separate workspace for yourself. Set up an office space in your living room or kitchen, or a standing desk in your bedroom. A well-designed, dedicated workspace will help you be more productive and establish a better work routine. If you need to switch things up every so often, alternate between your living room table and your kitchen table for a change of environment.

Prioritize wellness in your organization

As someone who spends every day thinking about how to bring remote teams closer together, I know that wellness activities for remote employees aren’t a luxury: they’re a necessity. The healthy habits for working from home covered here are a strong starting point, but building a culture of home office wellness takes more than individual habits.

Promoting remote work wellness is important, especially for distributed teams that don’t have the built-in social structure of an office. If you’re interested in implementing more structured wellness initiatives for remote employees or scheduling virtual wellness experiences that actually engage and energize people, get in touch with one of our TeamBonding event experts. We’d love to help.

Across industries, stress and burnout are quietly eroding performance and morale. Between blurred work-life boundaries and the lingering effects of remote fatigue, many teams are struggling to stay energized. According to the World Health Organization, depression and anxiety cost the global economy around US$1 trillion each year in lost productivity.

Mental health awareness activities aren’t a one-time HR initiative. They’re how organizations build the kind of culture where people can actually thrive. As a corporate trainer certified in Emotional Intelligence, DiSC, and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, I’ve spent over 30 years working with teams across industries on exactly this. In this article, I want to walk you through why workplace mental health matters, what leaders can do about it, and the mental health awareness activities and programs that make a real, measurable difference. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, but the truth is, this work doesn’t belong on a calendar. It belongs in your culture year-round.

5 reasons mental health in the workplace matters

A strong culture of care benefits both people and performance. When you prioritize mental wellness, employees feel more secure, focused, and valued, which translates directly into better business outcomes.

As mental health counselor Ramona Wink explains on the TeamBonding podcast, “One in five adults will suffer from a mental health disorder. If that person is not you, you are still impacted.”

It’s a reminder that building a mentally healthy workplace isn’t just about supporting the people who are visibly struggling. It’s about creating an environment where everyone can do their best work.

Here are five key reasons to make it a top priority:

1. It affects nearly everyone

Mental health challenges touch every workplace. One in five adults will experience a mental health issue, and nearly everyone will work alongside someone who does. Acknowledging that reality reduces stigma and opens space for understanding and support.

When people feel safe enough to say “I’m not okay,” the whole team benefits.

2. Burnout is widespread

89% of Americans have experienced burnout in the past year, a clear signal that chronic stress is no longer the exception. Unchecked burnout leads to decreased motivation, higher absenteeism, and lost innovation. Leaders who spot the warning signs early can help prevent exhaustion before it becomes resignation.

3. It shapes company culture

The emotional tone of a workplace affects how people collaborate and solve problems. When employees are anxious or disengaged, creativity and teamwork suffer. In contrast, teams that feel mentally supported are more likely to take risks, share ideas, and trust one another.

4. It improves retention

Employees stay where they feel seen, valued, and understood. People increasingly view mental wellness as part of job satisfaction, just as important as salary or benefits. A workplace that supports brain health creates loyalty that money alone can’t buy.

5. It drives long-term performance

Healthy employees are consistent employees. Sustainable productivity depends on balancing drive with recovery. Teams that prioritize well-being are better equipped to handle challenges and maintain focus over the long term, not just during crunch times.

6 ways leaders can promote mental wellness at work

Leadership plays a defining role in how teams experience stress, balance, and a sense of belonging. When you show that mental wellness matters, your team feels safer speaking up and asking for what they need. Here are six practical ways to support mental health across your organization:

1. Set and respect boundaries

Hybrid work has muddied the distinction between personal and professional life. There’s a blurred line that’s really hard to step away from when you’re always plugged in.

As a leader, you can help by avoiding late-night emails when possible, setting clear expectations about response times, and modeling what it looks like to truly log off at the end of the day. When you protect your own time, you give your team permission to protect theirs.

2. Normalize mental health days

Vacation time shouldn’t be the only acceptable reason to step away. When leaders treat mental health days like any other health need, it sends a powerful signal. Try something simple: “I’m taking a mental health day to recharge.” A message like that opens the door for others to care for themselves, too.

3. Have meaningful check-ins

Quick “How are you?” questions rarely uncover what someone is really going through. Instead, use one-on-ones to ask specific, open-ended questions:

How is your workload feeling right now?

Is anything making it hard to focus?

What would make the next few weeks more sustainable?

Listen without judgment, reflect on what you’re hearing, and follow up on any action items you discuss. Over time, these conversations build trust and psychological safety.

4. Encourage use of benefits

Many employees are unsure whether it’s truly okay to use therapy benefits, coaching, or employee assistance programs. You can remove that doubt by regularly reminding your team what’s available and framing these resources as a normal part of staying healthy.

The more you normalize getting support, the more people will actually use it.

5. Share self-reflection tools

In my training sessions, I teach a simple framework employees can use in stressful moments:

What am I feeling?

What do I need?

What can I do?

Naming emotions, identifying needs, and taking small, realistic steps forward is what emotional intelligence actually looks like in practice. You can even open a meeting by inviting people to quietly run through these questions as a check-in. It helps people get grounded before the work begins.

6. Integrate team-based wellness

Wellness in the workplace doesn’t have to be a solo activity. Shared experiences bring people together in ways that individual resources alone can’t replicate. We also offer guidance on preventing employee burnout to help you keep your team feeling their best year-round.

Over time, shared wellness rituals can become part of your culture, giving employees something positive to look forward to and talk about.

Building a culture that supports mental health

A healthy culture doesn’t just talk about mental wellness; it demonstrates it daily. That starts with open dialogue and removing the stigma around mental health.

One reframe I’ve found useful: many organizations are now using “brain health” as a more neutral, approachable term. It shifts the conversation away from crisis and toward maintenance. You don’t have to be struggling to benefit from good mental health practices.

When leaders model that kind of authenticity, employees feel permission to do the same. That openness can transform a workplace from reactive to resilient.

Mental health awareness activities and programs that work

Team building isn’t just about fun. It’s about connection, trust, and emotional well-being. The right mental health activities for the workplace help employees notice each other’s needs and build a shared language around wellness. These mental health awareness activities for the workplace work because they’re experiential: people don’t just learn about well-being, they practice it together.

Here are four experiences at TeamBonding designed to support mental wellness and team resilience:

Employee Wellness Program

This experience blends movement, laughter, and light physical activity to reduce stress and lift energy. It’s a great mental health activity for employees, regardless of team size, and it gives people a shared framework for self-care that they can carry forward long after the event.

Scheduling these mental health awareness activities for employees throughout the year shows that caring for mental health in the workplace is an ongoing priority, not a one-time initiative.

Team Resilience Training Workshop

This is one of the mental health team building activities I’m most proud to be part of. It teaches teams to bounce back and even thrive amid stress, uncertainty, and change. Participants walk away with a concrete resiliency plan at both the individual and team levels.

The program covers what happens in the brain under stress, how to return to calm, the role of sleep and movement in mental fitness, and the power of social connection. Available in person or virtually, it’s a program where people consistently leave saying it changed how they think about pressure.

Meditainment

Guided mindfulness exercises help employees quiet their minds and refocus. For teams that are carrying a lot, this kind of structured calm can make a real difference. People need a baseline of calm to keep stress manageable, and this program helps them find it together.

What fuels each generation?

Something that often gets overlooked in conversations about mental health awareness activities for employees is that different generations have different needs, stressors, and work expectations.

Today’s workplace spans five generations, each shaped by different historical, social, and economic experiences. Baby Boomers may value stability and recognition. Gen X prizes autonomy and independence. Millennials often seek purpose-driven, collaborative environments. Gen Z wants authenticity, belonging, and real flexibility.

When those different needs go unaddressed, tension builds. People feel misunderstood, disengaged, or overlooked, and that takes a real toll on mental wellness.

Our Multi-Generational Workforce Training helps teams understand what fuels each generation, adapt communication styles, and turn generational friction into productive collaboration. Participants move from awareness to application through interactive discussions, realistic scenarios, and hands-on exercises. When every generation feels understood and valued, the whole team is healthier. That’s not just good culture work; it’s a smart mental health strategy.

How to measure mental health initiatives in your workplace

Progress starts with listening. Use short surveys, anonymous feedback forms, and stay interviews to understand how employees are really doing. Simple metrics like participation in wellness programs, retention rates, and time-off usage can reveal whether your culture is becoming more balanced.

Sometimes the most powerful approach is the quietest one: an anonymous virtual whiteboard or pulse check can help teams surface issues before they grow, giving people space to share a little more than they might otherwise.

The goal is to keep learning, adjusting, and showing up consistently.

Build a stronger, healthier workplace with TeamBonding

Mental health awareness events and ongoing mental health awareness activities are how organizations turn good intentions into a lasting culture. When leaders combine clear boundaries, honest conversations, and tangible resources with the right shared experiences, mental wellness stops being a side topic and becomes part of how work gets done.

Whether you’re looking for mental health games and activities for the workplace or a full professional development program, TeamBonding has experiences designed to meet your team where they are.

If you manage a remote or hybrid team, you already know the challenge: keeping people connected, motivated, and genuinely excited about their work when they are scattered across cities, time zones, and living rooms. Virtual employee engagement is the puzzle every modern leader is trying to solve, and the old office playbook won’t cut it.

After the pandemic turned our business 100 percent virtual overnight, I found myself planning over 180 virtual events in a single month. That crash course taught me exactly which virtual employee engagement activities land with teams and which ones get the collective eye roll.

Here are the best engagement ideas for remote teams that actually work.

Why does virtual employee engagement require a different playbook?

Here is the thing about remote work: it is not a trend. It is the landscape. According to the Gallup State of the Global Workplace report, fully remote workers report the highest engagement rates at 31 percent, beating hybrid workers at 23 percent and on-site employees at 19 percent. The catch? Remote employees are also more likely to experience loneliness, stress, and difficulty unplugging.

In a traditional office, bonds form by accident: break room chats, birthday cake and brainstorming over coffee. Remote teams do not get those moments unless someone builds them on purpose. That means every interaction needs to be intentional, and when it is, the connections that form are often stronger than the ones left to chance.

Whether you are searching for virtual employee engagement ideas, professional growth strategies, or ways to fight burnout, that intentionality is the common thread.

What are the best virtual employee engagement activities?

Team building activities are still one of the most effective ways to bring remote employees together, but they have to be the right ones. Nobody wants another forced icebreaker. The best virtual engagement events give people a shared experience they will actually talk about afterward.

Here are some employee engagement ideas for remote workers that consistently deliver:

Virtual cooking classes: An expert chef guides your crew through a recipe step by step from their own kitchens. Everyone gets a shopping list and prep guide beforehand, plus a full recipe guide after. It is relaxed, interactive, and the kind of event people genuinely look forward to.

Virtual escape rooms: Problem solving meets friendly competition. We offer themes from a Sherlock Holmes murder mystery to a blizzard survival challenge, all designed to get people communicating, delegating, and strategizing in ways that carry over into everyday work.

Virtual happy hours and mixology classes: An award-winning mixologist teaches your group how to craft cocktails or mocktails while everyone chats and relaxes. I have watched these become the most anticipated events on a team’s calendar month after month.

Game shows and talk shows: Our Corporate Tonite Show drops teams into a talk show studio for lip sync battles, guessing games, and humorous challenges. Customize it with your company’s inside jokes and milestones, and it becomes something truly personal.

These shared experiences are the foundation of remote team engagement. They create inside jokes, common reference points, and a sense of belonging that is almost impossible to build through status meetings alone.

How can virtual activities improve remote employee engagement?

Virtual activities improve remote employee engagement by creating shared experiences that build trust, communication, and belonging among people who rarely see each other face to face. A collaborative cooking session, a fast-paced escape room, or a lighthearted game show gives teammates the same bonding opportunities that in-office teams get through daily proximity.

The real magic is what happens after the event. Now, someone will remember their coworker’s terrible attempt at a flambé or clutch puzzle-solving move in an escape room. That personalization makes them far more likely to reach out with a question, offer help on a project, or speak up in a meeting. That kind of psychological safety fuels high-performing teams.

I’ve seen it hundreds of times: a group of strangers on a screen finishes the session laughing, swapping stories, and feeling like they belong. That energy doesn’t disappear when the event ends. It carries straight into the workday.

Don’t skip professional development for remote employees

One of the biggest mistakes organizations make is treating professional development as an in-office perk. Remote employees need growth opportunities just as much, and when someone is working from home day after day, it is painfully easy to feel like their career has stalled.

Offering virtual training programs tells your team you are invested in their future. It keeps people sharp, engaged, and moving forward, which is critical for long-term retention.

Our In Time program is a great example. It is a virtual time management training where employees learn to prioritize tasks, manage overlapping deadlines, and use online productivity tools effectively. It’s hands-on and practical, tackling something nearly every remote worker struggles with. No conference room required, just commitment from leadership.

Build a rhythm of virtual professional development into your annual plan: monthly workshops, quarterly training sessions, or lunch-and-learn events. When employees know growth opportunities are coming, they stay forward-looking instead of stagnant.

What are the best remote team engagement ideas for recognition?

In an office, recognition happens naturally. A shout-out after a meeting, a high-five in the hallway, donuts to celebrate a win. In a virtual environment, all of that disappears unless you replace it with something intentional.

Engaging remote employees depends heavily on recognition. When remote employees feel seen, their engagement, productivity, and loyalty all climb. When they feel invisible, disengagement follows fast.

Here is how to make recognition part of your remote culture:

Start every team call with a win. Five minutes of celebrating accomplishments, big or small, sets the tone for the entire meeting.

Send employee appreciation kits. A physical package at someone’s door bridges the digital gap in a way that a Slack emoji never will. Explore our employee appreciation ideas for remote workers for inspiration.

Use public channels for praise. Make recognition visible. When the whole team sees someone celebrated, it reinforces a culture of appreciation and motivates everyone.

Schedule virtual engagement events for milestones. Work anniversaries, completed projects, quarterly goals: use virtual events to celebrate together and build the kind of loyalty that keeps people around.

Preventing burnout and supporting wellness

Remote work burnout is real, sneaky, and one of the biggest threats to keeping your virtual team engaged. When your home is your office, the lines blur fast. Many remote employees struggle to unplug, skip breaks, and quietly burn out before anyone notices.

You set the tone as a leader. If you are firing off midnight emails and stacking back-to-back meetings, your team will mirror that behavior. Model healthy boundaries instead, and your team will find it easier to recover from remote work burnout.

A few practical ways to protect your team:

Encourage real breaks. Short walks, stretch sessions, or simply stepping away from the screen add up to a major difference over the course of a week.

Be mindful of meeting overload. Ask yourself if that next meeting could be an email, a recorded update, or an async message instead.

Check in with intention. Go beyond project updates. Ask how people are actually doing, and listen to the answer.

Invest in wellness programming. Virtual wellness events, like laughter yoga or mindfulness workshops, give your team permission to prioritize well-being.

Keep communication consistent and human

Communication is the oxygen of remote teams, but there is a fine line between informed and overwhelmed. The best approach balances structure with warmth.

Regular team huddles are a strong starting point. A short daily or weekly check-in creates a reliable touchpoint, keeps projects moving, and opens space for the casual conversation that builds real relationships. Our guide to remote team huddle ideas can help you keep those meetings fresh and energizing.

Beyond scheduled calls, pay attention to your async culture. Are your Slack channels inviting or strictly transactional? Do people feel comfortable sharing a win, asking a question, or dropping a funny meme? A team’s communication vibe is a leading indicator of its engagement, so notice when things start to feel stiff and course-correct early.

Putting it all together

Virtual employee engagement is not a box to check. It is an ongoing commitment to building a workplace where remote employees feel connected, valued, and excited to show up every day. The strategies that stick combine meaningful activities, professional growth, genuine recognition, wellness support, and human communication.

If planning thousands of virtual events has taught me anything, it is that remote teams thrive when their leaders lead with intention. You do not need a huge budget or a complicated strategy. You just need to care about your people and follow through.

When I first started planning virtual programs at TeamBonding, “distributed teams” wasn’t the buzzword it is today. Companies occasionally hired remotely, but it wasn’t standard practice. Fast forward to now, and the distributed workforce is more than just a trend; it’s the way modern business gets done.

From my years managing team building and corporate training events, I’ve seen the magic and the mess of this model. The magic? Access to diverse talent, flexibility, and often increased productivity. The mess? Loneliness, communication breakdowns, and the very real risk of burnout.

That’s why distributed team engagement can’t be left to chance. In this article, I’ll share practical ways I’ve seen companies keep their people connected and thriving. These are strategies that go beyond theory and come straight from decades of experience helping teams build culture across screens and time zones.

The benefits and struggles of a distributed workforce

A distributed workforce simply means employees aren’t tied to one central office. Some work remotely, some from satellite offices, and others from entirely different countries. Done well, this model unlocks huge benefits:

Access to broader talent pools: You’re no longer limited to who lives within commuting distance.

Faster hiring for critical roles: Finding niche skills is easier when you cast a wider net.

Cost savings: Reduced office space, utilities, and travel expenses add up quickly.

Diversity of perspective: Teams become richer in ideas and problem-solving styles when employees come from different backgrounds and geographies.

And let’s not forget the employee side: more flexibility, fewer commutes, and often improved work-life balance.

But there’s another side of the coin. These teams often face challenges that can chip away at culture and engagement:

Loneliness and disconnection: Without casual office interactions, isolation can set in.

Communication breakdowns: Misunderstandings are more likely when everything happens digitally.

Cultural gaps: Employees across regions may experience the workplace differently.

Burnout: When home and work blur, unplugging becomes harder.

Gallup’s 2024 State of the Global Workplace report found that 25% of fully remote employees experience daily loneliness, compared to just 16% of on-site workers. I’ve seen every one of these challenges play out firsthand. The good news is that they’re solvable as long as leaders approach distributed team management with intentionality.

These struggles aren’t “bugs” in the system. Loneliness, disconnection, or burnout don’t mean distributed work doesn’t work; they mean leaders haven’t yet built the structures to support it. The truth is, company culture doesn’t disappear when people work remotely. It just shifts into new spaces.

If leaders don’t step into those spaces with intention, teams feel the gap. But when they do, the results can be powerful. I’ve seen distributed teams outperform their in-office peers because leaders treated communication, recognition, and belonging as deliberate priorities.

Five strategies to engage and connect distributed teams

1. Foster open, transparent communication

The number one reason these teams disengage is silence. If employees feel out of the loop, trust and motivation decline. Leaders need to create intentional communication systems that replicate (and often improve upon) the spontaneous updates in an office.

That means more than sending another Slack message. It means:

Regular team check-ins where updates and wins are shared openly.

Clear channels for different types of communication: quick chats, project discussions, and personal connection.

Psychological safety so that employees feel they can speak honestly without fear of judgment.

From my facilitation work, I’ve found the best leaders ask questions that invite conversation, not just compliance. Instead of “Does everyone understand?” try “What obstacles might get in the way of this plan?” It opens the door for real dialogue.

2. Build a culture of feedback and recognition

In a distributed workplace, you can’t leave recognition to chance. Those little nods of appreciation that happen in person disappear when the team is spread out. You have to put them back in, deliberately.

Weekly meaningful conversations matter. Gallup emphasizes that managers should aim to have at least one meaningful conversation per week (15 to 30 minutes) with each direct report, covering recognition, goals, strengths, and challenges, to build high-performance relationships.

Here’s what I’ve seen work best:

Create a feedback loop: Schedule consistent one-on-one conversations and team retrospectives.

Make recognition visible: Share wins publicly during video calls or team emails.

Get personal: Some employees love a spotlight; others prefer a private thank-you note. Ask which they prefer.

Recognition is the easiest (and cheapest!) way to boost morale. But it only works if it’s authentic and consistent.

3. Respect flexibility while guarding against burnout

One of the biggest perks of distributed work is flexibility. Employees can design schedules around their lives, whether that means caring for kids, pursuing education, or simply avoiding rush-hour commutes.

But flexibility has a shadow side: burnout. Burnout in distributed teams is sneaky. It rarely shows up as someone saying, “I’m burnt out.” More often, I notice subtle signs in virtual sessions: cameras off more often than on, contributions shrinking, or humor disappearing from the chat. These are the cues leaders need to watch for.

Addressing burnout isn’t just about reminding people to take breaks. It’s about noticing when the energy shifts, checking in one-on-one, and showing genuine care. Sometimes just asking, “How are you, really?” makes all the difference.

To balance flexibility with well-being:

Encourage boundaries: Celebrate when employees log off on time.

Model balance: If leaders are sending midnight emails, the message is clear.

Watch for warning signs: Decreased participation, slower response times, or irritability often signal distributed team burnout.

Flexibility isn’t a free-for-all. It’s a structured freedom, and leaders set the tone.

4. Equip teams with the right tools and training

Technology is the oxygen of distributed workplaces. Without it, even the most motivated team can’t perform. Outdated software, weak internet, or clunky workflows are more than annoyances. They’re barriers to engagement.

But tools alone aren’t enough. Employees also need training to use them well. I’ve facilitated plenty of events where the source of frustration wasn’t the people or the task: it was someone not knowing how to screen share or access a document.

Smart companies invest in:

Reliable hardware: Company-issued laptops and headsets level the playing field.

Collaboration platforms: Tools like Teams, Zoom, or Asana that fit the team’s needs.

Skill-building: Workshops that teach not just the tools, but also digital etiquette and communication best practices.

This is also a great opportunity to invest in professional development that works in a virtual format. Our Time Management Training helps distributed employees learn to prioritize tasks, handle overlapping demands, and maximize their workday productivity. Corporate Presentation Skills Training sharpens speaking and delivery skills so team members can present with confidence across screens. And Virtual DiSC Training gives teams a shared language for understanding communication styles, which is especially valuable when you can’t read body language in person.

Distributed workforce management works best when tech empowers, not exhausts, your team.

5. Create intentional social connections

This is where my passion lies. Humans are wired for connection. Without it, even the most efficient team will eventually stall. For distributed teams, social connection must be built into the system.

That means more than the occasional virtual happy hour. It’s about weaving moments of distributed team building and belonging into the fabric of work. Some of my favorite approaches include:

Virtual icebreakers: Quick activities at the start of meetings that help people connect as humans.

Monthly social events: Virtual trivia, escape rooms, or laughter yoga keep energy high.

Cross-department sessions: Opportunities for employees to interact outside their immediate teams.

One of my favorite examples is when a new hire joins a distributed group, and the manager hosts a virtual icebreaker session. Within minutes, strangers become teammates, and then productivity skyrockets. That’s the power of connection.

The real goal of these connections isn’t just laughter, though that’s important. It’s trust. When team members know each other as people (not just job titles), they collaborate more openly, share ideas more freely, and handle conflict more constructively. I’ve seen teams transform overnight simply by carving out intentional time to connect as humans.

Team building activities for distributed teams

At TeamBonding, I’ve had the privilege of facilitating thousands of events designed specifically for distributed groups. The right activities don’t just fill time. They solve real engagement challenges. A few standouts:

Race Around the World: Teams solve interactive challenges across global destinations. Perfect for improving problem-solving and communication under pressure.

Cookie Tales: A storytelling workshop where employees decorate cookies while sharing creative narratives. Lighthearted, engaging, and surprisingly effective at breaking down barriers.

Climate Change Challenge: Combines teamwork with purpose to help companies engage employees in sustainability goals.

Wellness Stock Exchange: A virtual team building event where employees “buy and sell” wellness tips in a fast-paced, interactive exchange. It’s fun, energizing, and designed to leave your team with practical strategies.

Each activity is designed not just for fun, but for connection, collaboration, and culture-building: the three pillars of a successful distributed workplace.

Ready to strengthen your distributed workforce?

Managing distributed teams isn’t going away. In fact, they’re becoming the norm for modern companies. The question isn’t whether your organization can make them work.

It’s whether you can make them thrive.

Here’s the good news: the keys are simple.

Foster communication.

Recognize contributions.

Respect flexibility.

Equip employees.

Create connection.

Do these consistently, and you’ll transform your distributed workplace into a culture of belonging and performance.

I’ll end with the reminder I share in every leadership workshop: We are humans at work first. Remembering that is how you lead a team.

Explore our catalog of virtual events and team building activities for distributed teams or connect with us to design something custom for your workforce. The results will surprise you, in the very best way.

Employee happiness is one of those topics that gets a lot of head nodding in meetings but not nearly enough real action. I have spent over three decades building TeamBonding, and if there is one thing I have learned from working with thousands of teams, it is this: happy employees are more productive, more creative, and far more likely to stick around. Workplace happiness is a competitive advantage, and organizations that treat it as such consistently outperform those that do not.

The numbers back this up. Research from the University of Oxford found that happy employees are 12% more productive than their unhappy counterparts. Gallup’s 2026 State of the Global Workplace report paints an even starker picture: global employee engagement fell to just 20% in 2025, costing the world economy an estimated $10 trillion in lost productivity. That’s not a typo. Ten trillion dollars, gone, largely because people do not feel connected to their work or their workplace.

So what makes employees happy, and how can leaders do a better job of making it happen? I’ll walk you through what I’ve seen work, both in my own company and across the thousands of organizations we have partnered with.

What drives employee happiness in the workplace?

Employee happiness in the workplace comes down to a handful of key factors. None of them are complicated, but all of them require intentional effort.

Work-life balance remains at the top of the list. According to Zippia, 72% of employees say a good work-life balance is very important to them, and that tracks with everything I’ve observed. When people feel like they have time for family, hobbies, and rest, they show up at work more focused and energized. Promoting a healthy work-life balance is one of the most direct paths to a happier team.

Meaningful work is another major driver. People want to feel that what they do matters. A Harvard Business Review study found that nine out of ten workers would accept lower pay to do more meaningful work. When employees understand how their role connects to a bigger mission, their sense of purpose and satisfaction skyrockets.

Positive relationships with coworkers also play a huge role. Toxic environments breed resentment and turnover. Collaborative, supportive ones build trust and make work feel less like a grind. That’s exactly why team building works: it creates shared experiences that strengthen bonds and break down silos. I’ve seen it transform teams time and time again.

Recognition and appreciation are equally powerful. Gallup research shows that employees who feel recognized are significantly more engaged, yet the 2025 SHRM State of the Workplace report found that 34% of U.S. workers feel their contributions go unnoticed. A quick acknowledgment, a genuine thank-you, or a small gesture of appreciation can shift someone’s entire outlook.

Finally, growth opportunities keep worker happiness high over the long term. People don’t want to feel stuck. When employees see a clear path forward, whether through professional development, mentoring, or new challenges, they stay motivated and invested.

How can you increase employee happiness?

Now that we’ve covered what makes employees happy, let me share some practical strategies for making it happen.

Encourage work-life balance proactively

This goes beyond just saying you value it. Review workloads regularly, encourage breaks, and get creative with your workplace PTO policy. Consider offering time off for volunteering or piloting flexible scheduling. Ask your employees what would actually help them recharge, and then follow through.

Prioritize open communication

Workers who feel heard are workers who feel valued. Create channels for honest feedback, hold regular one-on-ones, and foster an environment where people feel safe raising concerns. This kind of transparency is also essential for building trust in the workplace, which is a foundation of any happy team.

Offer flexibility where possible

The data on this is clear. A 2024 Stanford study found that employees working from home two days a week were just as productive as their in-office peers and 33% less likely to quit. Whether it’s remote options, hybrid schedules, or flexible hours, giving people more control over how and where they work has a measurable impact on happiness.

Invest in recognition and support

This doesn’t have to be expensive. Peer shout-outs, team celebrations, handwritten notes: these small gestures add up. Pair that with real support systems like mental health resources, wellness programs, and regular check-ins, and you’re building a workplace where people genuinely want to be.

Create pathways for growth

Offer training, mentorship, stretch assignments, and professional development opportunities. When employees feel like they’re learning and evolving, their engagement rises naturally. Gallup’s research consistently shows that businesses with engaged employees are significantly more profitable, so this is an investment that pays for itself.

Why does employee happiness matter for your business?

Here’s the bottom line: happy employees are more productive, and the research is unambiguous. Gallup’s 2024 analysis of more than 183,000 teams found that highly engaged teams deliver roughly 23% higher profitability. They also experience dramatically lower turnover.

On the flip side, disengagement is staggeringly expensive. Half of all employees globally are either watching for or actively seeking a new job, according to Gallup’s 2025 data. When people leave, they take institutional knowledge, relationships, and momentum with them. Replacing them costs time and money that could’ve been spent building something great.

Workplace happiness programs don’t have to be massive, complicated initiatives. Sometimes the biggest impact comes from the simplest actions: asking someone how they’re doing and meaning it, recognizing a win publicly, giving your team the breathing room to do their best work.

How to build a lasting culture of employee happiness

The key to sustaining workplace happiness is making it part of your culture, not a one-time initiative. That means measuring it, talking about it, and acting on what you learn.

Use surveys and anonymous feedback tools to get an honest read on how your team is feeling. Track engagement metrics alongside performance data and look for patterns. Most importantly, talk directly to your people. Find out what they value most and use that information to shape your approach.

Make sure your efforts reach everyone, not just one department or seniority level. Every employee has different needs, and a one-size-fits-all approach will always fall short. The goal is to create an environment where happiness is baked into the everyday experience of working at your company.

According to a 2026 Gallup report, US employee engagement fell to just 31% at the end of 2025, its lowest point in a decade. Globally, only 20% of employees are engaged, costing the world economy an estimated $10 trillion in lost productivity in a single year. That’s not just sad—it’s expensive. Disengaged employees cost companies billions in lost productivity, higher turnover, and missed opportunities.

But here’s the good news: employee engagement isn’t some mysterious force you can’t control. It’s something you can actively build, measure, and improve. With over 15 years of experience creating, customizing, and executing events for corporate teams across every industry, I’ve watched companies transform their cultures through intentional strategies, genuine connection, and consistent effort.

In this guide, I’ll explore everything you need to know about employee engagement: what it really means, why it matters more than ever, and 10 proven employee engagement activities for creating a workplace where people actually want to show up.

What is employee engagement?

Employee engagement is the emotional connection an employee feels toward their organization, which influences their behaviors and level of effort in work-related activities. The more engaged an employee is with their company, the more effort they put in.

It’s not the same as employee satisfaction or happiness. A satisfied or happy employee might be content collecting a paycheck while doing the bare minimum. But an engaged employee? They’re invested, and they care about outcomes. They go above and beyond not because they have to, but because they want to.

Engaged employees believe in their company’s mission, feel connected to their colleagues, and see their work as meaningful. They’re the ones who stay late when it matters, volunteer for challenging projects, and become your best brand ambassadors.

Why is team engagement important?

Keeping employees engaged is essential for any business that wants to achieve its goals. Employee engagement is one of the most impactful aspects of a business, and it can separate a struggling business from a booming one.

Here’s why employee engagement and performance are so closely linked:

Productivity goes up. Highly engaged teams are 23% more productive than their disengaged counterparts, according to Gallup. Disengaged employees, by contrast, tend to do the minimum while waiting for a better opportunity.

Turnover goes down. Replacing a single employee costs between 0.5 and 2 times their annual salary. People who feel connected to their team and company are far less likely to start scrolling job boards.

Customer experience improves. Engaged teams deliver measurably better service. Organizations in the top quartile for engagement see 10% higher customer satisfaction scores than those in the bottom quartile.

Innovation increases. When people feel safe, valued, and invested in their work, they’re more willing to take smart risks and share new ideas. Psychological safety and engagement go hand in hand.

Absenteeism decreases. Disengaged employees call in sick 37% more often than their engaged counterparts. Engagement keeps people present in every sense of the word.

Company culture strengthens. Engagement is both a reflection of culture and a driver of it. Strong engagement reinforces the behaviors and values that make your organization worth working for.

Revenue grows. Gallup research has found that business units with top-quartile engagement see 23% higher profitability than those in the bottom quartile. Engagement isn’t just a people strategy; it’s a business strategy.

Because of this, keeping employees engaged with the right people engagement activities is a critical aspect of running a business. Engaging disengaged employees can help you increase productivity, build a stronger workforce, and gain a competitive edge.

Biggest challenges to employee engagement

Understanding the biggest challenges to keeping employees engaged is the first step to solving them. Here are the most common engagement killers I see:

Lack of recognition

When employees feel invisible, engagement plummets. People need to know their work matters. A simple “thank you” at a team meeting or via email can make a huge difference. Recognition doesn’t have to be expensive—it just has to be genuine and timely.

Poor communication

Communication plays a critical role in keeping teams engaged. When employees don’t understand the “why” behind decisions, or when information flows poorly, trust erodes and engagement follows.

Employee burnout

Employee burnout is one of the fastest ways to kill engagement. Overworked employees eventually disengage as a survival mechanism. They pull back, do the minimum, and look for the exit. Preventing burnout requires realistic workloads, adequate support, and regular breaks.

Limited growth opportunities

Employees want to see a future. When there’s no clear path for development or advancement, engagement stagnates. Personalizing your onboarding experience and creating clear development plans help employees see that future.

Disconnection from purpose

The number one priority of working professionals today is understanding the real purpose behind their work. According to research, 57% of young Americans say their priority is enjoyable and meaningful work. When employees can’t connect their daily tasks to a larger purpose, engagement suffers.

Workplace complacency

Complacency in the workplace isn’t just a productivity killer—it’s a silent epidemic that drains creativity, morale, and innovation. When “good enough” becomes the standard, engagement dies.

Top 10 employee engagement activities

Though it’s clear that employee engagement is essential, finding the right engagement activities can be challenging. What will engage my team? What activities or strategies work best? These can be tough questions to answer. However, we’re going to provide 10 of the best staff engagement activities to help get you started. Just remember to consider your team and their preferences. These are all great ideas in general, but individual teams respond differently to various forms of engagement.

1. Give back as a team

One of my all-time favorite team engagement ideas is giving back together. Charitable events are a great way to encourage bonding, develop relationships, and get team members more engaged with the organization.

Two examples are Team Teddy and Just Roll With It. Team Teddy has teams create and customize teddy bears for kids in need, coupled with exciting challenges. Just Roll With It is a similar event, but it’s timed and involves making skateboards for kids in need.

Both of these events are great employee engagement activities. We also have a suite of other charitable events that are perfect for employee engagement, so give them a look.

2. Prioritize employee health

When it comes to ideas for employee engagement, employee health is often overlooked. An employee’s physical and mental health can play a big role in their ability to stay engaged with their work, and prioritizing their health can make a big difference.

Happy and healthy employees are much more likely to be invested in the business and their coworkers, and work their hardest to help the company achieve its goals.

Our employee wellness program is a great option for those who want to prioritize employee health. This three-stage program includes a variety of wellness activities that help employees with their health, while also creating a healthier and more positive work environment.

3. Try a four-day workweek

Though this may seem like one of the more radical employee engagement ideas, improving work-life balance via a four-day workweek can greatly improve engagement and employee loyalty. It can also help prevent burnout and increase retention.

Since the pandemic, more and more employers are moving away from 9-to-5 office jobs toward more flexible, employee-focused opportunities. As a result, companies across the globe have begun piloting four-day workweeks. Despite working fewer hours, most trials have seen increased productivity. In fact, Microsoft Japan saw a 40% productivity increase with a four-day workweek. Buffer reported increased employee autonomy and overall work happiness, as well as reduced stress levels.

4. Creative compensation

Benefits and compensation are among the many factors that impact engagement, and trying new ideas can help you keep employees’ attention. Get creative with compensation and offer fun activities and perks to your workers.

Consider introducing an arts and culture stipend for local theatre shows, museums, and concerts. You could also give your employees a wellness stipend for a monthly gym membership, sports classes, or equipment. This signals to the employee that you care about them and their personal lives, even when they’re not on the clock. This, in turn, can make them more dedicated and engaged in their work.

5. Effective communication

If you’re looking for simple employee engagement activities you can implement immediately, effective communication is a great option. Clear and open communication is key to business in general, so it’s no surprise that it can help with engagement, too.

Employees are more engaged when they feel like they can ask questions, talk things through, and have open conversations with those around them, including management and leadership.

An open door policy is a great start. That encourages employees to voice their concerns, talk to their bosses, and be more involved in the business as a whole. In turn, that increases employee engagement.

6. Incorporate team building

For more creative ways to engage employees, team building is a good choice. There are many reasons for team building, and employee engagement is one of them. Team building is an effective way to increase engagement while also improving other key skills.

Team Mixology, for example, involves teams creating their own unique and creative cocktails, potentially as part of a friendly contest. Giving your team the chance to let loose a bit can be a very effective way to get them more engaged.

Another option is the Corporate Tonite Show for remote teams. It is a virtual Tonite Show-style game show with a live host and exciting activities, all of which help increase engagement.

7. Invest in growth

One of the many reasons employees get disengaged is that they aren’t challenged and don’t see room for growth, promotions, or new skills. Directly investing in your employees’ growth, whether through team building, upskilling, or other training programs, helps them stay more focused and committed to the organization, thereby increasing engagement. LinkedIn’s 2024 Workplace Learning Report found that 94% of employees say they would stay at a company longer if it invested in their learning and development.

Two programs I particularly recommend:

Discover Your Strengths: Based on the Clifton StrengthsFinder, this program helps your team identify what they naturally do best and then learn how to leverage those strengths in real work situations. Participants complete a simple online assessment and, through group activities and guided debrief conversations, build a shared understanding of each other’s talents. The result is a team that communicates better, collaborates more effectively, and shows up with more energy because they’re doing work that actually fits them. Each participant also receives a copy of either StrengthsFinder 2.0 or Now, Discover Your Strengths, so the learning extends well beyond the session.

Effective Communication: This team building workshop gives your people the tools and insights they need to communicate more effectively at work. Whether your team struggles with cross-functional alignment, remote communication, or just getting everyone on the same page, this program meets them where they are. We’ve been facilitating sessions like this for more than 35 years, and the impact is real: better conversations, fewer misunderstandings, and stronger working relationships across the board.

8. Mentorship programs

Tying into the last option, mentorship programs can be another great way to increase engagement. Developing a cross-departmental or senior management mentorship program can encourage collaboration, learning, growth, and engagement.

Employee mentorship programs are especially beneficial because they help engage both mentors and mentees. They can also increase trust, efficiency, and job satisfaction, which provide their own benefits to your business. On top of that, mentorship programs help you develop a stronger, more skilled, and flexible workforce that can help push your business forward.

9. Recognize and reward employees

Employees want to feel valued, which is why employee recognition is one of the best engagement strategies for any company. However, we often focus on results rather than the effort the employees put into their jobs.

A sincere “thank you” at a team meeting or via email will make your employees feel appreciated and respected, increasing engagement. In fact, 87% of employees say feeling appreciated increases their motivation. Taking the time to recognize your employees’ work and efforts will increase employee loyalty and performance.

And don’t be afraid to get creative with recognition, rewards, and incentive ideas. Consider all your options and find rewarding, exciting, and engaging ways to recognize employees. There are plenty of great occasions to recognize your team, such as Administrative Professionals’ Day, Intern Day, and more.

10. Focus on inclusion

Wrapping up our list of employee engagement activities is inclusion. Though this is one of the employee engagement ideas that often gets overlooked, it can have a huge impact on engagement.

Help employees see how their work contributes to the bigger picture. Share customer success stories. Explain how their project impacts the company’s mission. Connect daily tasks to organizational goals. Understanding what employees value most helps you create that meaningful connection.

Seasonal engagement strategies

Aligning engagement efforts with the seasons keeps things fresh and gives you natural hooks for planning. Each season offers unique opportunities:

Winter: Combat seasonal blues with winter team building activities. Holiday parties, winter sports outings, cozy indoor events, and year-end celebrations help teams stay connected during the darkest months.

Spring: Harness the energy of renewal with ideas that bring your team together. Outdoor activities, spring cleaning projects, Earth Day initiatives, and fresh-start team building all work well.

Summer: Take advantage of good weather and summer energy. Jump-start your summer outing plan with beach days, outdoor sports, picnics, and adventure activities that get people outside, energized, and happy.

Fall: Autumn in the workplace marks a transition back to focus. Fall festivals, harvest themes, Halloween events, and year-end goal prep all create opportunities for engagement. This is also a great time to host an office potluck!

Staff engagement activities made easy

Here’s a statistic that may surprise you: employers extended full-time offers to 62% of their intern class in 2024, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). However, stats for internal mobility would be even higher if more companies treated intern recognition as more than an afterthought. A box of donuts and a “thank you” mug? We can do better, and should.

Interns represent your future employees, brand advocates, and leaders in training. When you compliment, praise, and recognize them, you reinforce a culture that values people from day one. When interns feel seen and appreciated, they tend to stay because they develop passion, loyalty, and love for your business. According to Gallup, employees who get valuable performance feedback from the people they work with are five times more likely to be engaged. That’s a mindset that begins well before their first full-time role.

Enter National Intern Day 2026!

If you’re wondering, When is National Intern Day? It always falls on the last Thursday in July, which this year is July 30. This National Intern Appreciation Day marks your company’s golden opportunity to thank interns in a meaningful, creative, and memorable way. These up-and-coming professionals contribute fresh ideas, extra hands, and Gen Z fluency in tech and trends. So, if corporate plans to buy a pizza and call it a day this year, TeamBonding is here to level you up!

Creative ways to celebrate Intern Appreciation Day 2026

If your plan for Intern Appreciation Day is a last-minute store-bought cake in the breakroom, rethink it. Happy National Intern Day should feel sincere and personalized, unlike something you remembered 10 minutes before the morning meeting.

Here are a few creative ways to celebrate your interns:

Give your interns public praise on social media, in meetings, and in the company newsletter. Don’t underestimate the value of a well-crafted shoutout.

Create face time with leadership. Schedule short “Ask Me Anything” sessions between interns and directors or executives who have been in the business a while. These conversations offer insight and build mentorship bridges.

Offer personalized growth tools. It could be an inspirational book about careers or a customized resume coaching session. Give interns resources that speak to their future.

Host a short but meaningful awards ceremony. Go beyond “Best Intern.” Give out fun titles, like “Spreadsheet Sorcerer” or “Most Likely to Fix the Printer Without Crying.” Make it funny and entertaining with praise and heartfelt gratitude.

Schedule a professional development event. Discover Your Strengths, or StrengthsFinder 2.0, is a corporate leadership and team building workshop where interns (and current employees) can uncover their professional talents and build confidence. Business teams will learn how to leverage their strengths, helping them achieve personal and professional goals.

Whether remote or in-office, your interns should leave National Intern Day feeling celebrated, not just acknowledged.

You can also try these other intern appreciation ideas:

Have a manager write a handwritten thank-you note highlighting specific moments or achievements that have helped the company.

Give interns branded office supplies they’ll use, like quality pens, custom notebooks, or thermoses.

Create a photo wall (digital or physical) featuring interns throughout their internship. Let them take it home as a keepsake.

Let interns take over your company’s social media accounts to share what they’ve learned and loved about working with your company. (They’ll make it look cooler than you can.)

Pair interns with a senior team member for a career development lunch where they can ask questions about career paths, industry trends, and growth opportunities in a relaxed setting.

The best Intern Appreciation Day 2026 experiences combine appreciation with authenticity. Interns know when you’re just checking a box, so don’t do that. Instead, make it meaningful.

How to say happy National Intern Day with meaning

Intern Appreciation Day deserves more than a lukewarm box of pizza and an awkward round of applause. A meaningful National Intern Day doesn’t have to be expensive or over-the-top, but it should be intentional, creative, and fun. Connection builds positive culture, and fun is the fastest way to make that happen.

The best celebratory events strike a balance between gratitude and enjoyment. Want to create something interns will remember? Think beyond the boardroom.

For instance, you can kick things off with a hands-on experience like Team Mixology. Whether crafting the perfect cocktails or zero-proof mocktails, this social, interactive session is a hit for interns looking to unwind and relax outside the office. It’s less “corporate” and more “cheers to your hard work,” a celebration with a few drinks.

Looking for a surprise and fun away from the conference room? Hop aboard the Mystery Bus. Interns pile in without knowing the destination, resulting in a laughter-filled, trivia-laden trip around the city. There will be teamwork, music, road trip games, challenges, and shared adventure with spontaneous, energizing, memorable moments. There are three guaranteed experiences on this bus trip: one culinary, another cultural, and the last is a low-stress physical exercise.

Do you think your interns would prefer an outdoorsy, active celebration? Plan a custom day of outdoor activities, such as relay races, scavenger hunts, or field days. These intern team building activities get everyone moving, laughing, and bonding through friendly competition and fitness. Plus, something is refreshing about ditching the desk for sunshine and team spirit. It’s also a great intern outing idea for companies looking to blend wellness with celebration.

The bottom line is that the best celebratory event shows your interns they’re appreciated, valued, and worth more than a coffee run. It tells them, “We see your effort and are glad you’re here.” And when appreciation meets play, you build memories and stronger teams.

Virtual National Intern Day ideas for remote teams

Just because your interns work from home doesn’t mean they should feel like an afterthought. National Intern Day is just as important, if not more, for remote interns who may be missing hallway high-fives, team lunches, and in-person positive energy. With creativity and good intentions, you can plan a virtual Intern Appreciation Day that feels personal, fun, and inclusive.

Check out these practical virtual National Intern Day ideas to make your interns feel special.

Host a Virtual Happy Hour. Give interns a chance to let loose and socialize beyond their screens. This TeamBonding event doubles as an online mixology class, hosted by an award-winning mixologist. Groups will learn to make a couple of delicious cocktails, and kits with fresh ingredients are delivered directly to their door. Games, icebreakers, and trivia create space for laughter, casual conversation, and connection with coworkers in all company corners.

Send personalized care packages. There’s something special about receiving unexpected, fun mail. Create intern-specific boxes with snacks, company-custom swag (mugs, socks, and notebooks), and a handwritten, personalized note of appreciation. Skip the cookie-cutter language; make it personal by mentioning something each intern contributed while working with your business. Highlight and praise their efforts.

Set up a virtual project showcase. Give interns the spotlight with a short, structured presentation where they walk through a project, an idea, or a takeaway from their internship. This empowers interns while giving company leaders a look at emerging talent and new perspectives from fresh eyes.

Offer a career-focused reward. Gift interns with something that invests in their future. This could be access to a professional development course, a one-on-one coaching session, or a curated mentorship chat with a senior leader. It sends the message: “We care about what’s next for you.”

Pro Tip: Virtual doesn’t have to mean impersonal. When your digital celebration has thought and heart, it can be as meaningful as anything in the office, and maybe even more so.

Why intern recognition builds a stronger company culture

Recognition is the foundation of belonging. When people feel they belong, they give their best. It’s that simple.

Interns may be temporary, but their business impact is long-lasting. They bring fresh, positive energy, new perspectives, a willingness to learn, and a passion for the business industry. When you take time to appreciate their contributions during National Intern Day, you’re validating their effort. You also reinforce the idea that everyone is valued regardless of tenure or rank. That message echoes beyond the intern team.

According to Deloitte, companies prioritizing employee and intern recognition see 31% lower voluntary turnover, a significant cultural win. This means more people want to work for your company. And while interns may not be part of your immediate long-term headcount, they’re watching closely. They’re absorbing how your team communicates and connects, how you celebrate victories, and whether junior voices are heard. They’re seeing generational workplace culture and hoping to add to that. Interns need to know they’re somewhere where they matter.

The ripple effect of appreciation doesn’t stop with interns. The company sees a culture of appreciation in action, elevating morale everywhere. Full-time employees see mentorship efforts being honored, leaders get a chance to be inclusive, and your brand becomes one that attracts top talent. When you invest in team building activities for interns, you’re investing in the future of your organization.

Did you know interns who feel seen are more likely to return as full-time hires? They might even speak positively about your company online and recommend your workplace to peers. There’s a long-term ROI on small moments of gratitude. Recognition is more than good vibes; it’s a strategy for loyalty, engagement, and building a culture people want to be part of.
