This year’s list highlights two trends worth watching. Gateway cities like New York are roaring back, while high-growth hubs like Nashville and Austin keep climbing. Planners clearly want destinations that pair big-city scale with experiences you can’t get anywhere else.

New York’s four-spot jump stood out to me the most. The city’s mix of iconic venues, transit access, and sheer density of things to do makes it a natural fit for large corporate and association events, and it’s a reminder that the meetings map keeps shifting.

This year’s hotel rankings tell a different story from last year’s. Austin’s JW Marriott jumped four spots to claim #1, and the Gaylord brand had a standout year with three properties in the top 10.

That Gaylord showing says something about where group business is heading. These convention-center hotels are built to host large, complex programs under one roof, which is exactly what planners need when they’re moving hundreds of people through general sessions, breakouts, and meals.

Las Vegas showed its depth, too, landing three hotels in the top 10. That kind of range signals properties that can support big, involved events without losing responsiveness or that all-important sense of partnership.

Seeing JW Marriott Austin claim #1 brought a smile to my face. I’ve facilitated multiple events here, many of which are built around local Austin themes. One favorite was a Price Is Right-style event called “C’mon Down” (everyone knows I love a good game show team building event).

We had questions about local food, like estimating the cost of authentic Austin barbecue for a group of 20, plus a bunch of other regional categories. The team’s flexibility helped us connect participants to the location in a memorable way.

Fairmont Austin

The Fairmont Austin has been a consistent partner for our “Tools for Schools” charity programs and high-energy “In It to Win It” events.

Their staff understands the logistics of large, complex events, helping with everything from securing space to pre-sorting donated items to coordinating local pickups. During one Tools for Schools event, we set up stores with supplies for over 100 backpacks, and the venue team executed a seamless room flip in just 20 minutes. Now that’s what I’m talking about.

Nashville: where music meets exceptional meetings

Nothing breaks the ice faster than a little friendly food competition. A fall bake-off is a low-barrier, high-reward way to get people talking. Ask everyone to bring their best fall dessert: pies, breads, cookies, anything drowning in pumpkin spice.

Want more structure? Run a Team Chili Cook-Off. Each group starts with basic ingredients and earns extras by completing mini challenges, so it’s part cooking, part strategy, all delicious. It travels well, too, working in the office or remotely with photo submissions and online voting.

• Mixology Lessons. Learn to mix apple bourbon cocktails or spiced cider.

So, without further ado, my top twelve group activities for Halloween:

1. Do a virtual pumpkin carving class

Carve out some time with your team (the puns continue) with virtual pumpkin carving. It’s an alternative to an in-person pumpkin carving Halloween team building activity for remote and hybrid teams.

This is one of my favorite Halloween virtual events for work because it’s great from start to finish. Your team members will have carving kits delivered to their doors ahead of time, which really amps up the excitement. (I mean, who doesn’t love getting presents?)

Next, they’ll hop on an event hosted by a Master Pumpkin Sculptor, have fun together, and wrap things up with awards and prizes.

Pro tip: This is also a great way to celebrate National Pumpkin Day on October 26th! 

2. Compete in classic pumpkin races

Whether you’ve heard of the world-famous Pumpkin Races or not, this one’s always a hit. Our Pumpkin Race is an in-person event where your team will work together to assemble and design pumpkin racers before competing for the Grand Champion title. 

This is one of the most fun and unusual Halloween team building ideas your team will ever experience! Trust me. 

I’ll never forget the first time we tried Pumpkin Racing. I admit, I was a bit skeptical until I saw teams from a tech company get super invested in the aerodynamic designs and weight distribution of their individual pumpkins—it was like watching Formula 1! 

The top two teams had these strategically designed racers that just demolished the rest of the competition. One was lovingly titled the “over-engineered gourd,” and it became a mascot for the rest of the day. I think that was when I knew we’d found a winner!

3. Give everyone creepy treats

This is less of an engaged, hands-on Halloween team building activity and more of a fun gift to your team. No matter how you approach it, you’ll have plenty of tasty cookies, candies, cocktails, and other treats to enjoy after the event! 

Whether you’re in-person, virtual, or hybrid, just look for a fun way to provide your team with a wealth of creepy treats, spooky cocktails, and candy platters. You can even make it a Halloween food contest and give a special prize to the winners.

4. Shake up some spooky mocktails

Want the festive cocktail energy without the booze? Spirit-free spooky drinks are one of the easiest Halloween office ideas to make inclusive for everyone on the team.

Okay, I know this isn’t a normal Halloween team building activity, but we all need to blow off some steam every now and then. Workdays can be draining, so what better way to let loose and prevent burnout than catapulting pumpkins and watching them explode?

I’ve spent over 30 years working with teams across the Fortune 500 and nonprofits, and it’s taught me this: team development isn’t optional if you want your organization to thrive. Here’s what I’ve observed: when people genuinely like working with each other and feel invested in their team’s success, the entire culture shifts. Productivity goes up. Turnover goes down. And honestly, people look forward to coming to work. That’s the ripple effect of investing in your people.

If your team doesn’t establish basic trust, clear communication, and genuine connection during the forming stage, you’ll feel the impact for months. Conversely, when teams invest in really getting to know each other early, the rest comes easier.

From my experience, the biggest mistake leaders make during forming is rushing. They want to jump straight to delivering results. But skipping relationship-building guarantees you’ll hit turbulence in the next stage.

What Forming Looks Like in Practice

Suppose a software development team spends their first week on structured get-to-knows; sharing backgrounds, work preferences, communication styles and even professional goals. It might feel slow and make leaders get antsy. But I’ve seen teams that invest that time hit their collaborative stride in half the time it takes teams that skip it. The foundation you lay in forming pays off with compounding returns at every stage that follows.

One powerful activity I recommend is team building exercises designed around communication and relationship-building. Events that get people talking and collaborating without the pressure of immediate work deadlines help accelerate this stage.

Stage 2: Storming

Now your team knows each other a bit, and the real work begins. Welcome the storming: what I affectionately call the “growing pains” phase.

In storming, personality differences surface. People have different work styles, different priorities, and different approaches to problem-solving. Some folks want to plan everything, while others want to jump in and experiment. Some are direct communicators, while others are more diplomatic. Those differences, which seemed charming during forming, now create friction.

I constantly see conflict emerge around decision-making, role clarity, and resource allocation. Quieter team members might withdraw. More outspoken members might dominate. Alliances form. It’s messy, and it’s completely normal.

Conflict Is Natural; How You Handle It Matters More

Here’s a big truth I’ve learned: teams that skip storming successfully don’t exist. Conflict resolution isn’t a sign of failure; it’s a sign of authenticity. The real test is how your team handles that conflict.

What Storming Looks Like in Practice

I’ve seen this kind of conflict play out dozens of times. The teams that come out stronger are almost always the ones where the manager stepped in early, created space for direct dialogue, and helped both people feel genuinely heard. My name is Karl Burrows. I’m a New Zealander of Maori descent and the founder of Haka Works, and I’ve been running haka team building workshops for more than fifteen years. What started as a way to share my culture has become something I genuinely believe is one of the most effective tools for building cohesion in professional teams. I’ll show you why.

What is the haka?

The haka is a traditional Maori dance form originating with the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand. Far more than a performance, it’s a living expression of culture, identity, and collective emotion. Traditionally, different types of haka served different purposes: some were war dances performed before battle, others celebrated births, welcoming ceremonies, or farewells to the deceased. Each carries its own words, its own story, and its own intention.

This practice engages the whole body: the stamping feet, the outstretched tongue, the wide eyes, the powerful voice. Every element has meaning. The meaning of haka is rooted in the idea of fully inhabiting the present moment and channeling that energy outward, toward the group and toward a shared purpose.

How has the haka evolved over time?

Originally, the Maori haka was performed exclusively within tribal contexts, a practice tied to land, ancestry, and communal identity. Over the centuries, it entered new contexts, gaining visibility on the world stage in the 20th century.

The most widely recognized version today is “Ka Mate,” performed by the All Blacks, New Zealand’s legendary rugby team, before every test match.
